The IKEA Home Project 2009

IKEA celebrates the 30th birthday of the iconic KLIPPAN sofa by inviting over 30 of Australia’s most talented artists and designers to create a unique design using the KLIPPAN as their canvas and the importance of home as their inspiration.

Each of the sofas will be auctioned online and all money raised donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal to support the rebuilding of homes.

Community, creativity and generosity are at the core of the IKEA Home Project. Never before in Australia have we seen such a diverse group of artists join forces with a global company like IKEA, and the public to support a cause as fundamental as the rebuilding of homes lost in the Victorian Bushfires.

IKEA’s invitation to visual artists to create a unique KLIPPAN breaks down the barriers that have traditionally stood between art and design; between ‘high art’ normally found in galleries and ‘low art’ found in the everyday environment. The invitation provided a creative challenge for artists to apply their skills and imagination to working with a standard, functional object – a piece of iconic design familiar to us all.

Each of the artists of the IKEA Home Project responded to this task with empathy, honesty and energy. Home is the face of a family member, a bold collection of colours, a warm nest of crochet covers, a childhood memory and an urban experience, an escape into fantasy.

Artists featured includes: Ron Adams, Del Kathryn Barton & Romance Was Born, Cash Brown, Sarah Contos, Daniel Mudie Cunningham, Louisa Dawson, Deb, Will French, Jessica Geron, The Glue Society, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Minie Graff, Michelle Hanlin,Samuel Hodge, Akira Isogawa, Jasper Knight, Deborah Kelly, Catherine Martin, Lindy Lee & Robert Scott-Mitchell, Nana Ohnesorge, Phibs, Tom Polo, Mickie Quick, Squatspace, Rekoo Rennie, Elvis Richardson, Kate Ronde, Spacecraft & Stewart Russell, Rachel Scott, Naomi Troski, Pete Volich and Gosia Wlodarczak.

Above all things, the IKEA Home Project is defined by a generosity of spirit; from the artists in donating their time, energy and imagination to the cause; from the sustained commitment of IKEA in rebuilding communities; and from the public in supporting this event and the auction.

Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund

In February 2009 Victoria was devastated by the worst bushfires in Australia’s history. The scale of this tragedy was unprecedented. Victoria is only just beginning to recover from the bushfires – 173 people lost their lives and many others were seriously injured. Seventy eight communities were impacted and 430,000 hectares of land was destroyed.

The Victorian and Commonwealth Governments established the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority to coordinate and oversee the rebuilding program, and we’re working closely with local communities on the recovery process. The money raised in this auction will go the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.

Happy Days 2009

Artist: Jessica Geron

Acrylic paint on KLIPPAN cover

Home? - A collection and intermeshing of stories… the birthday party where the whole family wore those silly hats, the baby wriggling on the floor, the new couple canoodling and the cool bike trick you figured out riding down your street. This painting represents this mish-mash of memories, which combine to give us a sense of home.

The Magnetic Couch 2009

Artist: The Glue Society

Magnets and found objects on KLIPPAN

The sofa is the heart of every home. People, friends, family, coins, objects, crumbsare instinctively attracted to them. And the better the sofa, the bigger the attraction.Pull the heart out of a house – you can’t help but bring some of the home with you.

Untitled 2009

Artist: Michelle Hanlin

Acrylic paint, textile medium, textile markeron KLIPPAN cover

Heraldic art, historically, has been a direct way to indicate individuality and identity. This could also be said of our home no matter where that is. Here, the language of heraldic display, regalia and ornamental paraphernalia has been employed, adjusted and embellished to refer to elements we might consider to be desirable aspects of our home, such as harmony, love, respect and life.

We Are Family 2009

Artist: Nana Ohnesorge

Gesso, permanent pigment pen and acrylic paint on KLIPPAN cover

This sofa cover is about the people who create a home for us: our families, friends and ourselves. Nana depicted some members of her family (including herself) in the silhouettes, and aimed for different generations to create an instant circle of friends and an artwork at the same time.

Free to a Good Home 2009

Artist: Squatspace

Fabric paint and laundry pens on KLIPPAN cover

The complexity of what home means to different people is examined through a meditation on the life cycle of the KLIPPAN and the various people involved at every step along the way, and the meaning of home to each of them. From the design process of the KLIPPAN in Sweden, through to its manufacture in China, its shipping, its sale in an IKEA store, its use by its owner wherever that may be, and the eventual place of rest at the end of its life cycle.
