Blue Gold - Sydney Internatinaol wine Competition
Colour
Lagrein is a vibrant, youthful purple/red in colour.
Aroma
Fresh, juicy mulberries and a hint of spicy, briary wood complexity.
Palate
On the palate it offers unique tree fruits and herbal notes, with plums and dark berry fruits in abundance, reminiscent of ripe mulberries. Firm and vibrant, it finishes with clean acids and lingering flavours of fleshy, berry fruit with highlights of light vanilla oak, nuances of mint, and eucalypt. Soft and medium bodied with savoury tannins, chewy textures and superb food compatibility, it is a modern fleshy, fruity wine which just keeps repeating “drink me”.
Grape Variety
Lagrein originates from the Alto Adige region in the north of Italy where it is known for the very soft easy to drink wines it makes. It is a very vigorous variety so it takes serious controlling in the vineyard. Partial root zone drying, sacrificial canes and crop thinning all help to control vigour and limit berry size to produce wines with good concentration and colour.
Winemaking Note
Cold soaked for 24 hours, then fermented in small open fermenters, hand plunged twice daily and given a dry maceration for several weeks to flesh out the palate the 2004 Lagrein has matured for 15 months in tight-grained centre France hogsheads with medium toast.
Domain Day is a unique vineyard situated on a carefully selected site at Mt Crawford, high in the hills at the south eastern extremity of the Barossa Valley. Its altitude of 450 metres and the mix of unusual varieties make it one of the coolest and most interesting vineyards in the Barossa.
Winemaker Robin Day is an industry veteran with almost 80 vintages under his belt over 40 years of winemaking in 12 different countries. His global knowledge and experience has determined the varieties that have been planted for differing reasons. We have several new varieties to Australia that he has worked with internationally (Garganega, Lagrein, Saperavi, Nebbiolo), as well as the more mainstream varieties he has enjoyed
working with throughout most of his career (Riesling, Viognier, Merlot).
Domain Day has been established using state-of-the-art vineyard design protocols based on soil assessment and analysis to give a 'micro-terroir' approach within the broader ambit of the vineyard.
