The opportunity to enjoy exquisitely aged, premium Hunter Valley treasures is a rare and cherished experience. The 2003 growing season was hot and dry, delivering very small yield but the resulting wine has great concentration and flavour.
Colour
The colour is mid to deep red, much deeper than usual and there is some brick-red on the rim indicating bottle development.
Aroma
The bouquet is quite intense with complex medicinal herbs, dark fruits and heady alcohol aroma of aged brandy with cedar wood and oaky vanillin spice.
Palate
This is a big concentrated Shiraz unlike most Hunter examples. The early palate is full of ripe fruit flavours and big grainy tannins that lead to more complex array of brambles, leather and polished mahogany. The finish is smooth and sensuous with a lingering aftertaste.
Food Matching
This is quite a weighty Shiraz and is perfect for slow cooked meats like lamb shanks, Osso Bucco, beef stroganoff or Pot au feu.
Cellaring Potential
At 9 years old, this wine is nice drinking now and it will continue to develop for a further 5 plus years. It sealed with a premium cork so it will last the distance if kept in a cool dark environment.
As a negociant winemaker I travel throughout this country’s wonderful wine regions meeting some of the great characters behind their brands. Every now and then I stumble across extraordinary hidden gems; wine treasures that have gone unnoticed for years or have been concealed to protect their reputation. Unearthing these delights and discovering their complex characters is something I want to share with all wine lovers.
The unearthed collection gives these rare wines a new life however the original winemaker and label remain a secret along with the medals and accolades it has achieved. Whilst this wine’s true identity can’t be shared, the experience is open to all. This range of limited release, aged classics is from a single estate vineyard in the lower Hunter with majestic views of the Brokenback ranges. The wines have been stored in a temperature and humidity controlled cellar since bottling and each wine is a genuine example of premium low volume, hand crafted winemaking.
I’ve released a vertical selection of 5 vintages of Semillon, 5 vintages of Chardonnay and 4 vintages of Shiraz. It’s a fascinating way to see how these premium Hunter wines develop over time and the difference the conditions of each vintage influence the final outcome. This entire collection is from the same Estate and it may be the only time such a comprehensive range will be available at one time.
Enjoy the mystery and celebrate your unearthed discovery!
