Colour
Mataro berries are thick skinned and give a vibrant plum red colour of moderate intensity. Combined with the cherry red of Shiraz it has a captivating glow in the glass.
Aroma
The nose opens with distinctive Mataro spices of star anise, nutmeg and cloves and then builds to intense smoky game and leather with fleshy mushrooms and truffle. Shiraz contributes ripe mulberry and chocolate which is lifted by the alcohol intensity.
Palate
Many old Mataro vineyards were destroyed during the vine-pull scheme of the 1980’s and its rich spicy wines were all but forgotten. Thanks to a resurgence of interest in traditional blends with a contemporary twist, we are now seeing these exciting flavours reappear. This wine combines the tight savoury spice of old vine Mataro with rich Barossa Shiraz.
Food Matching
One of the great matches for this blend is Chinese style BBQ pork or roast duck with traditional sweet and spicy sauce. Crispy skin Peking duck with Hoisin or a spicy Malaysian sambal are exciting dishes that are providing wonderful new flavour experiences for this classic blend.
Cellaring Potential
Australian Shiraz has a solid reputation for producing wines of great longevity and well made Mataro can age for decades. This blend has been released after 4 years maturation and will comfortably cellar for a further 8 years.
