A delicious wine, with an abundance of blackcurrant and cassis fruit, supple mouthfeel and tannins; plenty of depth.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Majella is famous for the production of high class Cabernet Sauvignon and this wine is no exception!

It’s deep, magenta in colour with a very vibrant freshness.

Cherries, choc mint and blackberries show up on the nose with hints of eucalyptus and “vanillin” oak.

The palate is rich with ripe dark-fruits and well weighted, grainy tannins. As ever the finish is long and lingering, and it is certainly a wine that will stand the test of time.

Vintage Notes: The 2010 Vintage saw perfect ripening conditions with warm days and cool nights and this is evidenced by the intense fruit characteristics of this wine.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes for this wine were harvested in early April and vinified at our winery here in Coonawarra. The ferment was kept quite cool and after about 6 days the wine was transferred to French oak barrels (300 litre, 50% new oak) to finish its fermentation. MLF occurred in the barrel and the wine was further aged in oak for another 22 months or so.

Winery Profile

The Lynn family have been residents of the Penola – Coonawarra district for over four generations, starting out as store keepers and then graduating into grazing.

Viticulture started in 1968, when 6 acres of Shiraz was planted. There wasn’t a lot of money in it, but it complimented the sheep enterprise, so eventually some 70 acres were planted – about 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 1980 Majella sold their first grapes to Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate. This was the start of a long relationship that continued for over 20 years. Since 1989 they have continued planting new vineyars and at present they have about 150 acres under vine. Most of the new plantings have been Cabernet Sauvignon, but there are some small areas of Merlot and Riesling planted as well.

In 1991, the first 600 cases of Shiraz were made up and in 1994 the famous Majella Sparkling Shiraz was born. In 1998 the Malleea Cabernet Shiraz was born and this has been acclaimed as one of Australia’s great red wines.
