This is not a big wine, but delicate and elegant with loads of inviting flavours.
In the mouth it is vibrant and alive with multiple flavours.
The balance of acid, tannin, alcohol and oak is very good and in keeping with the body of the wine.
The tannins are fine and delicate, not dusty and aggressive. In the finish sweet alcohol mingles with small fruit flavours which linger.
Colour
The colour is not dense but I bright reflective ruby.
Aroma
The aroma is very clean and predominantly cherry, cedar and cabernet aromas. There is a hint of that classical herbaceousness of the Cabernet family and a touch of earthiness.

The farewell is firm and as clean as a whistle.
It will have good staying power and reminds me of the 1978 and the 1980. It is worth remembering that a claret which is redolent of the cherry always makes a great wine, provided of course that the wine body and structure are good.
Mount Mary Vineyard is a family owned, single vineyard estate located in the heart of the Yarra Valley which lies in the south-eastern corner of Australia. Established in 1971 by Dr. John and Marli Middleton, Mount Mary was one of the first vineyards planted in the resurgence of the Yarra Valley as a premium grape growing region.
In 1971 that John and Marli stumbled upon the property known as “Mount Mary”. The site had, surprisingly, never been planted with vines yet they immediately recognised the gentle north facing slope and soil as being ideal for their purpose. The first vines were planted in 1972 and today we have some 30 acres under vine, all of varying age and varieties.
From the 10 grape varieties planted in the vineyard, we produce four wines, two whites and two reds. The first of our whites is a Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon blanc/Semillon and Muscadelle we named “Triolet”. The other is the well known “Chardonnay” of Burgundy. Similarly, in our reds we produce a Bordeaux Cabernet blend (Sauvignon/Franc/Merlot/Malbec/Petit verdot) which we call “Quintet” and the burgundian “Pinot noir”.
