Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the oldest established winery in Australia’s most celebrated fine wine region – Coonawarra. The Estate was founded by pioneer John Riddoch, who planted vineyards in 1891 and completed the estates famous triple gabled winery in 1896.
Since 1952 this wine has long upheld Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s reputation as a producer of premium Coonawarra Shiraz. Typically, the Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz has aromas reminiscent of ground black pepper, mulberry and raspberry, through to blackberry at the riper end of the spectrum. Oak is used to mature and increase the wine’s complexity, without dominating its distinctive cool-climate character. A medium bodied wine with a lengthy finish that will age gracefully in the tradition of the original Wynns Hermitage
Medium purple-red; the moderately intense bouquet is clean and smooth, with excellent mulberry fruit and oak integration and balance. There is plenty of sweet, dark berry/cherry fruit on the palate, with soft tannins contributing to a well-structured wine.
Rating 90 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (24 December 1999)
Winemakers Notes
Coonawarra owes its unique reputation as a wine region to a thin layer of rich red soil – ‘terra rossa’ which lies over porous limestone, providing its vines with ideal drainage conditions to produce intensely flavoured grapes. These grapes also benefit from a long, slow ripening season due to Connawarra’s cool southerly climate
The outstanding 1998 Shiraz has typical ground black pepper and mulberry fruit aromas with a hint of toasty oak. Flavours are soft and approachable with spicy cherry-like characters at the forefront.
