Tinta de Toro, a grape as unique heritage

The Toro region's grape is the Tinta de Toro, a dark, tough skinned variety from the Tempranillo family and one of the very few tor esist the phyllloxera. Tinta de Toro is only found in this part of Spain. Its small berries are rich in tannin and when picked at optimal ripeness, have exceptionally concentrated fruit flavours.

Aroma

Extremely rich and complex, the nose is a gushing palette of lively dark fruits (redcurrant, warm summer raspberries, cassis, blackberries) and delicate liquorice, truffle, balsamic and spices notes (cedar, nutmeg and black pepper), perfectly integrated with subtle toasty and roasted characters. The deep intense aroma grows up and evolves in the glass, opening up as it gradually mix with air, getting each time more intense and complex.

Palate

It’s a true several stage experience to discover the Toro terroir. It starts with an impressive velvety, round and delicious entrance, then the sensation of volume on the palate grows even more perfectly balanced with concentrated, firms and silky tannins, for a sensation of both weight and liveliness. The end of mouth is very long and complex with an extremely wide range of aromas, like assorted dark fruits, cocoa, truffle, mineral and toasted notes, for this powerful and elegant 2007 interpretation of Termanthia.

Numanthia’s vineyards span 50 hectares, with vines aged between 70–100 years; plus an exceptional plot in Argujillo featuring vines over 120 years old. The Numanthia range is based on the selection of the best grapes from the Toro terroir; with grapes picked at optimal ripeness to best express the region.

The 2007 was the coolest vintage experienced at Numanthia. The 2007 Termanthia show more oak on the nose, heady scents of camphor and wild honey infusing the ripe red berry fruit. The palate is full-bodied with decadent ripe red fruit but here, unlike the previous two vintages, I am missing the requisite tension and precision to maintain balance. The finish is very sweet and candied, which makes me wonder whether drinking more than one glass might be a law of diminishing returns? Still, it has good cohesion on the finish, but it is not a flattering Termanthia when compared directly against, say, the 2005 or 2008. Rating 92 - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (APR/2013)

This alluring red packs of lots of flavour into a plush texture, with boysenberry, floral, cinnamon, licorice and smoke notes. It's firm, fresh and balanced, with a long focused finish. Rating 93 - Wine Spectator (JAN/2010)
