Wine Summary Image

Sourced exclusively from the Coal River region of Tasmania, this definitive chardonnay and pinot noir blend delivers cool climate vibrancy, complexity and intensity.

The grapes for the 2009 Tasmanian Cuvée were sourced from the single 20 hectare Tolpuddle vineyard in the Coal River Valley, south-east of Hobart. Planted to pinot noir and chardonnay, the vineyard is influenced by the maritime climate and weather patterns from the Southern Ocean, creating cool night and day time temperatures which allow the grapes to ripen slowly and develop intense and complex flavours. The top soils have a very high sand content whilst the subsoil is dense clay. The vineyard is meticulously managed to ensure vibrant flavours and balanced ripeness expected from this region.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Appearance

Pale straw with green hues

Aroma

Green apple and pear tart characters are immediately appealing on the nose, with hints of chardonnay derived white flowers and mineral notes

Palate

A delicate palate shows finesse and balance, with a bright acid line and apple blossom characters. The palate also displays subtle elements of freshly baked bread and a creamy texture which all derive from extended yeast age. This wine retains a backbone of fresh acidity, minerality and length which are the hallmarks of Chandon Tasmanian Cuvée.

The grapes come from the 20ha Tolpuddle Vineyard in the Coal River/Richmond area southeast of Hobart. The final blend is 57/43% chardonnay and pinot noir, and the wine spent 36 months on yeast lees prior to disgorgement. Similar excellent mousse to the Yarra Valley Cuvee; the colour is still very pale (a good thing), and the wine has that chalky/minerally acidity unique to Tasmania; it is bracingly fresh and crisp, the finish long.

Rating 94 - Drink by 2017 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (APR/2013)

One of a cast of sparkling Chandons and perhaps the most recognisable in terms of its lively, lemon juicy tang and minerally palate layering, with just a tiny whiff of toast and yeast in the background. A perfect aperitif style. Tony Love Daily Telegraph, 14 February 2012
