Wine Summary Image

1er Cru Classé Supérieur Sauternes

The 2006 harvest was both challenging and exciting. The picking techniques at Yquem were decisive in harvesting ripe, botrytised grapes at the right time, in the right place, without wasting energy on less worthwhile plots.

2006 illustrates the benefit of varied terroirs and the importance of knowing them perfectly in order to make the most of the different soils and grape varieties under unusual weather conditions.

Expert Reviews

While no surprise here, this wine, which will be bottled in 2009, is certainly this estate’s greatest effort since their 2001. It completely outclasses everything from the appellation, but even when you’re number one, that’s often hard to do. This light gold wine offers up a sensational smorgasbord of aromas including huge honeyed pineapple and other caramelized tropical fruit flavors, massive richness, and a viscous, unctuous texture with the oak beautifully integrated. The wine has enough acidity to buttress its full-bodied mouthfeel, but this is not by any means the sweetest or most alcoholic of the d’Yquems I have tasted. In fact, in the range of d’Yquems, this is a powerful wine, but it is one built more on finesse and elegance, a la the 1988. Nevertheless, this wine will prove to have 50+ years of longevity. The finish, the mid-palate, the sensation of looking at a skyscraper of Semillon with a small dosage of Sauvignon, is impressive. Like all of the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes, one can drink this young, but the nuances and complexities really don’t emerge for at least a decade, especially in the case of a wine such as this. Bravo! Rating 96-98+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (FEB/2009)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Brilliant golden colour.

Aroma

The nose is still shy but we discern hints of apricot, peach and coconut. Creamy rich texture on the nose. The wine starts out quite round on the palate, plenty of volume, with a lively and rich evolution.

Palate

Beatuiful structure, the wine has excellent fullness and length.

The vintage 2006 was not so easy but with a very strict selection in the vineyard and cellar that wine made the best possible use of the different soils of Yquem.

Winery Profile

Château d'Yquem, A Mystery?

"More than four centuries of history are summed up in the words "Château d'Yquem Lur-Saluces" found on every bottle of Yquem. Wine lovers from around the world who come to visit the estate often ask about the secret of this great wine. My initial, slightly provocative reply is that there can be no answer, that the truth is shrouded in mystery, and that we are dealing with one of nature's enigmas. However, there are several logical explanations to offer. One of them is undoubtedly the winemaking passion shares by the family who owned the Château for twelve generations. Another is the unique terroir and carefully matched premium grape varieties.

Furthermore, Château d'Yquem's time-honoured vineyard management and winemaking practices have and important role to play. Last, but not least, there is the amazing alchemy brought about by Botrytis Cinerea the remarkable fungus that, here in Sauterned - and here alone - paradoxically transforms decay into gold. Above and beyond these reasons, Château d'Yquem must actually be smelled, tasted, and appreciated to understand its magic. In doing so, one realises that this wine is - and will always remain - a mystery.

Perhaps this is the best way of summing up the spirit of d'Yquem..." Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces (November 2002)

The Unique Terroir and Vineyard

Great wines are not born just anywhere, by accident. A unique set of climatic and geological conditions combine to form a rare equilibrium. This is undoubtedly the case at Yquem, which epitomises all that is best about the singular winegrowing environment in Sauternes.

Château d'Yquem's topsoil is warm and dry, accumulating heat thanks to smooth flat pebbles and coarse gravel. The clay subsoil contains good water reserves and there are numerous springs on the estate. Drainage pipes were installed some time ago to prevent water-logging (100km of drains since the 19th century). Yquem's large size made it possible to plant 113 hectares of vines on a very representative sampling of the rich tapestry of the Sauterne region's soil types.

This extraordinary variety of soils is a key factor in the quality and complexity of Château d'Yquem.

Château d'Yquem has 113 hectares of vines, of which only one hundred produce grapes in a given vintage. There are just two grape varieties: Semillon (80%), which produces a rich sappy wine with body and structure, and Sauvignon Blanc (20%), an early-ripening but less reliable producer, which contributes aromas and finesse.

The vines are tended with the greatest of care. Workers perpetuate a tradition of painstaking work under the watchful eye of the vineyard manager.

"This is the rich wine of the vintage. With its intensen fruit, piles of spice, but excellent balance, this promises flavors of baked apples and intense dried fruits. The botrytis layer is discreet, a hint rather than overpowering.

" Rating 94-96 - Wine Enthusiast

"Medium bright yellow, quite pale for 2006. Wonderfully fresh aromas of pineapple, coconut, caramel, vanilla and spices lifted by a floral element. Silky on entry, then dense but almost magically light on its feet, thanks to penetrating acidity that gives sharp definition to the tight, impressively concentrated lemon, pineapple and coconut flavors. Racy rather than thick, and almost painfully young today. Finishes with a captivating note of beurre sale A wonderfully pure and refined wine for 2006, but this really needs time in bottle to knit."Rating 95 International Wine Cellar

"This has turned creamy, with peach, apricot and tangerine notes caressed by heather honey and picking up a tangy green tea note on the finish. Long and very stylish. Drink now through 2012."Rating 91 Points Wine Spectator
