For over 20 years, Petaluma's Coonawarra has been predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two of the best varietals from South Australia's renowned Coonawarra region.
The fruit for Coonawarra is sourced from two main sites, the Evans Vineyard and the Sharefarners Vineyard. The average age of vines at Petaluma's Evans and Sharefarmers Vineyards is in excess of 30 years and these hand pruned, close spaced, vertical canopy vines are naturally balanced at modestcrop levels of 5 tonnes/hectare of hand picked fruit.
Grape Varieties
The 2008 Petaluma Coonawarra is once again a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvgion (60%) and Merlot (31%), with Shiraz (9%) making up the balance.
Colour
Deep intense colour.
Aroma/Palate
Typically elegant Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot in style, the Shiraz adds a lovely sweet supple middle, important in a wine so young. Deep intense colour with soft, sandy abundant tannin, the 2008 Petaluma Coonawarra is a big brooding dry red, and ranks amongst the best vintages in Coonawarra.
Cellaring Potential
While the wine is soft and approachable now, it really deserves very long term cellaring to allow the underlying cedar and spice to fully develop. A vintage to keep!
Established in 1976, Petaluma's vision is to make world class wines from the classic European varieties by choosing the best region for each variety and acquiring or planting the best vineyard in that region.
The simple hallmark Petaluma yellow label has come to represent Australian wines of refined elegance but stamped indelibly with characteristics of the vineyards of origin. Petaluma wines have been established as New World classics representative of the terroir of Australia’s best regions.
