The E.W.P.” is named after the patriarch of the family - Edgar Walter Pike. Edgar has been a grape grower since the early 1960’s and has been an integral part of the development of the vineyards and winery since 1984. A complex wine that changes in the glass as it breathes. It is a substantial wine that still manages to retain a degree of elegance. Difficult to see this maturing before 2025.
Ripe dark fruits, plums and dark berries, some dates, plum pudding, Xmas cake and spices, glace cherries etc. Supple, full and rich palate, ripe dark cherry and dark plum flavours. Ripe and rich, supple and dense with a lightness and some savoury edges. Supple and balanced. Rating 93, Nick Stock WBM (MAR/2011)
Colour
Deep red, almost black.
Aroma
Super ripe blackberry and plum with spice, coffee grounds and dark chocolate. Also has notes of roasted meats and grilled nuts. Quite complex.
Palate
The palate is rich, soft and powerful with chocolate, cherry and charry oak the main drivers, backed up nicely by silky tannins and enough acidity to keep the palate focused and finish long and persistent.
A complex wine typical of the E.W.P. style that is emerging. It has power, but is not a blockbuster.
Cellaring Potential
Under screwcap it will still be drinking nicely in 20 years time.
Pikes Vintners is an iconic family owned and operated winery set amongst the hills and valleys of South Australia's beautiful Clare Valley.
Established in 1984 the winery and vineyards are situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub region on the eastern side of the Clare Valley. The climate in this area is cooler and the soils are quite different compared to the rest of the region, imparting distinctive flavours and aromas to the wines.
Pikes is best known for its world class Riesling, but is becoming increasingly recognized for high quality, elegant red wines and their ever popular Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend. Pikes have also been a leader in planting new and alternative varieties to the district including Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Viognier. Pikes also produces Pikes Oakbank- a sparkling Pilsener style beer.
The distinctive English Pike fish appears on all Pikes products.
