Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke Deep red/purple colour: bright and youthful. Rich, ripe blackberry fruit aromas, very cabernet, with intensity and density, tannin aplenty and a degree of chew. The extract is extra good. A bright young thing which needs cellaring.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Full depth crimson red with purple hues.

Aroma

The nose is complex and intense, with cedar, blackberry and plum aromas with integrated oak and spice notes.

Palate

Rich dark fruits fill a palate that is both crisp and concentrated. Velvety, fresh fine grained tannins with balanced acidity give flow and length to the palate. Considered oak completes the layers in this outstanding vintage resulting in a wine that carries the classic St Hugo signature of power and elegance.

Cellaring Potential

Careful cellaring for 8-15 years will enable further development and integration of the ripe and intense fruit flavours and gradually reveal additional layers of complexity.

Food Matching

Char grilled beef rib eye with roast vegetables and red wine jus.

Winery Profile

In 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant called Johann Gramp missed the wine he used to drink in his home land. Instead of changing his habits, he decided to start growing grapes and attempt to make the wine himself. It was a way of adapting to a new country, but still staying true to his character.

What he didn't know was that when he planted the Barossa Valley's first commercial vineyard along the banks of Jacob's Creek, he was also planting the seeds of one of the most popular wine brands in the world that would be named after the waterway.

Today,  Jacob's Creek remains one of the most well known, trusted and enjoyed Australian wines around the world. It delivers fresh, elegant and great tasting wines that show true varietal character.

The philosophy of Jacob's Creek is to offer a range of wines that suit all occasions. As a company, we concentrate on two key things: The first is continuous improvement. Every vintage we strive to improve the quality of our wines by refining our winemaking practices and continually gaining a greater understanding of our vineyards.

The second is that in everything we do, at every step of the winemaking process, from the vineyards all the way through to your glass, we all work with the final destination in mind. We do it for the most important wine critic. You.

Blackcurrant, redcurrant, aniseed and nut packed chocolate here, with some tobacco and spiced oak. Medium bodied, minerally feel with appealing clean acidity, red and black fruits and cedar oak in support. Tannin is fine, but pulls the finish just a little too dry, with a kind of coffee bean crunch on exit, which gives me pause for its future. Otherwise, all excellent and very appealing. Rating 92 - Drink by 2022+, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (JUN/2015).
