Expert Reviews

Made with the usual flair; barrel fermentation is evident on the moderately complex bouquet, and again on the palate, but it is the way the wine progressively expands through to the finish and aftertaste that sets it apart; white peach, melon and pink grapefruit all flourish, the flavours heightened by the underlying acidity. Rating 94 - Drink by 2020, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUN/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Light straw colour.

Aroma

Appealing and complex Chardonnay nose. Rich fruit characters of nectarines are enhanced by mealy notes, grilled nuts and well integrated French oak.

Palate

The palate shows great balance between rich fruit and a fine tight structure. Stone fruit characters of nectarine and white peach fill the front palate which is followed by complex mealy notes. The French oak is wonderfully well integrated and complements the rich mid palate. The fine acid structure.

Winery Profile

3drops began with a family farm and a vision- a vision to produce premium wines and extra virgin olive oil whilst maintaining the integrity of the land for generations to come. Southwest of Mount Barker in the heart of the acclaimed Great Southern wine region of Western Australia, vines and olive trees flourish side by side in the cool, pristine climate.

The 3drops vineyard comprises 15 fertile hectares planted with varieties of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz. Italian, Greek and Spanish varieties of olive trees thrive alongside the vines. The name 3drops was chosen to reflect the attributes of three precious liquids wine, olive oil and water, with both the vineyard and olive grove carefully irrigated from a large wetland on the property.

The melding of time honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques and the latest technology, enables 3drops to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characters.

Plenty of cap gun action on the nose here: cowboys 4, Indians 0. Medium bodied with a slick glycerol feel, cool acidity with this undercurrent of smoky flinty stuff and a sprinkling of dried herb. Flavours are sweet and in the pineapple and nectarine spectrum of richness, though there’s some refreshing grapefruit in the mix. Finishes pretty clean, with a savoury twist. Kind of feels like a guilty pleasure, enjoying a Chardonnay that’s quite so juicy and dripping with flavour. Rating 91 - Drink by 2019, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (APR/2015).
