Expert Reviews

A rich, full-bodied shiraz that provocatively proclaims its McLaren Vale origin from the first whiff through to the aftertaste: black fruits are wrapped in a coat of dark chocolate and licorice, the all-up consequence a seductively rich wine. Its controlled alcohol keeps all its charms in a bra with moderate uplift. A sure future ahead.

Rated 95 by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion. (Oct/2015)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour:Deep crimson red with purple hues.

Bouquet: Details Lush forest fruits with hints of spice, black pepper and violets.

Palate: Bursting with ripe dark berries, cassis and dark chocolate. Firm yet approachable tannin structure frames the wine nicely with flowing length and generosity of flavour.

Food Match: Foundation Shiraz pairs exceptionally well with slow roasted herb and garlic crusted Lamb rack with a side of crisp potatoes.

Cellaring: This wine has superb ageing potential if carefully cellared.

Winery Profile

Tatachilla has been a part of McLaren Vale since vines were first planted over 100 years ago. Today the bright patchwork of olive groves, avocado orchards and rows of vines bordered by the South Australian coast impart a Mediterranean flavour to this evolving region.

Established in 1903, Tatachilla’s commitment to McLaren Vale has remained strong throughout the years. Its vineyards are scattered amongst the sloping hills and tapered basin of McLaren Vale, with fruit for Tatachilla’s wines sourced from key McLaren Vale subregions: Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale North & South and Clarendon.

Tatachilla’s own Clarendon Vineyard is the heart of Tatachilla, and the basis for our finest expressions of McLaren Vale wine.

Tatachilla’s wines evoke classic McLaren Vale characteristics blended with contemporary Mediterranean cues. The wines reflect the true character of the grapes, balancing a healthy respect for the vineyard with a light touch in the winery.

Heft of flavour is significant but it’s not out of balance and it feels fresh. This is a very good release. Saltbush, anise, sweet plums and an infusion of chocolatey oak make both a statement, and for an eminent drinkability. Positive impressions throughout.Rated 93 by Campbell Mattinson, the Wine Front.
