Generous lychee and tropical fruits from the Gewurtraminer, natural acidity and lingering flavours from the Riesling with mid-palate fruit and textural complexity from the Pinot Gris combine to create an intriguing yet very approachable wine.

Aroma

The 2012 Knappstein Three shows lifted aromas of lychee, white peach and rose petals with a background element of spice.

Palate

The palate mimics the nose displaying distinct flavours of lychee and tropical fruits but retains focus and structure via a strong acid backbone which also provides wonderful length.

The Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris were co fermented, mimicking the ‘selection masale’ that is common is Alsace. A hint of residual sugar rounds out a very complete wine and adds an interesting textural layer.

Cellaring

This wine is best enjoyed young in the first 3 years.

"You might opine that you get florals and slipperiness from the gewürztraminer; zest and length from the riesling; and a bit of fat and width from the gris. Or, less pretentiously, you could say this is a delicious, silky but just mouth-watering enough summer white, which offers a good flavour return for the $25 (or less). There’s a good amount of acid “cut” to cope with the butter and reduced stocky stuff, and enough richness to pull out the depth and detail of the prawn meat. Also good on its own as a preprandial appetite stimulant."
