Wine Summary Image

In 1981, fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue purchased a property in the Adelaide Hills with the intention of planting varieties well suited to the cooler climate of the region. The vineyard was originally part of a beautiful valley of apple orchards and natural forest that were destroyed by the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. Sitting at an altitude of 550m with an annual average rainfall of 1100mm, the Lenswood vineyard slopes offer not only beautiful views towards the older vine country, but also provide enough sunshine to fully ripen the grapes, together with cooler temperatures to retain natural acidity. The pinot noir vineyard has been named after Charles Giles, an early pioneer whose descendants had managed the property as an apple orchard since 1864.

Expert Reviews

Henschke Giles Pinot Noir doesn’t always ring my bells but this 2012 is a step in a very positive direction.

It’s in particularly fine form. It’s particularly expressive. Sweet mint, lavender, various dried spice. Then, beneath, meaty berried oomph. It has plush fruit but there’s plenty of herb and floral and spice notes. A beautiful wine. Gorgeous acidity. Polished and pretty with no lack of substance. It’s so fresh and perfumed. It may well be the best of the Giles line. Indeed, I think it is. Rating 94+, Drink : 2015 - 2025 Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front (20/FEB/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Crimson in colour with ruby hues.

Aroma

Fragrant, perfumed aromas of strawberries, cherries and cream, and wild forest berries with subtle hints of cloves and spices.

Palate

The rich, juicy palate is tightly wound with layers of crushed herbs and mint, rolling into subtle red currant and wild berry fruit flavours, while the beautiful acid balance and fine-grained tannins provide a long and velvety finish.

Cellaring Potential

Exceptional vintage, 15+ years (from vintage).

Winery Profile

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.

Light, bright crimson; cherry and plum varietal fruit on both the bouquet and palate; an enjoyable wine, but lacks the X-factor. Time (2-3 years) will partly remedy this, but not totally. Rating 91 - Drink by 2018 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2014)
