Expert Reviews

Deep garnet/purple, the 2012 Shiraz Lloyd Reserve is profoundly scented of crushed blueberries, blackberries and mulberries with hints of cedar, toast, marmite, menthol, spice box and anise. This full-bodied and concentrated Syrah is built like a brick house giving muscular fruit flavors that are structured by firm, fine tannins. It has a long, well-poised finish. Rating 95 - Drink by 2029, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (AUG/2015).

Seems to be carrying a fair whack of oak, and while the fruit is up to the task, I’d rather a little less, perhaps. Coffee, vanilla nougat and resin, rich blackberry, liquorice, earth and tar with some mint chocolate in the background. Full bodied, lovely mouth-coating earthy tannin, classic richness of McLaren Vale on the mid-palate, balanced acidity, depth and a rolling blue and purple thunder of fruit. Slick of tannin on a very long finish. Showy wine as a youngster, yet with the modest earthiness of McLaren Vale prevailing. The more you leave it alone in the glass (or bottle), the more it reveals its quality. Rating 95 - Drink by 2040, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (OCT/2015).

The slick of vanillin, resiny, coffeed oak is substantial and ultimately wins the day on palate. That said, if you'd like some fruit with your oak you get plenty here, with saturated plum, asphalt and jammy blackberry flavours roaring throughout. Assertive tannin sniffs the prevailing winds and enters with force. It's not much fun now but given (lots of) time it should perform. Rating 94 - Drink by 2037, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2015).
