Expert Reviews

A wine that likely has a lot of love, regardless of vagaries of vintage. I actually have a soft spot for wines with a fan base, regardless of my drinking preferences.

Raspberry ripple ice cream! Choc sundaes, cherry on chocolate, hint of mint and chamomile. Sweet-fruited perfume, but some nice herbal notes too. More herbal and leafy to taste but black fruit flows lusciously – chewy tannins tinged with greenery give good structure and firmness, dragging flavours long, touch of spiky acidity spoils the party a little. Medium-bodied, sleek, with rustic charm of splintery oak and earthiness throughout. Good gear. Rating 89 - Drink by 2020, Mike Bennie, winefront.com.au (FEB/2015).

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep, dark crimson with vibrant hues.

Aroma

Intense aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, plum, chocolate and light mint seamlessly interwoven with delicate cedary oak. There is a subtle hint of warm clay earth and dried tobacco aromas.

Palate

A medium bodied, softly textured Cabernet Sauvignon with an elegant, concentrated, rich palate, layered with a complex meld of blackcurrant, mulberry, raspberry and dark chocolate flavours. A good elegant structure: velvety, though linear and long. The flavours that linger on the finish are focused by the regional dusty fine tannins and perfectly balanced acidity.

Food Matching

Gold Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is great with Seared Wagyu burgers with wild rocket and Dijon mustard; or slow roasted shoulder of lamb with fresh mint sauce and baby beetroot.

Cellaring Potential

Will develop complexity with age if carefully cellared. The sublime character of a good Cabernet sauvignon is revealed through ageing: a wine renown for its longevity.

Winery Profile

Award Winning Winery

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

Wolf Blass Wines have a tradition of quality, character and consistency from the refined and elite Platinum Label, and the majestic and complex Black Label through to delicate Rieslings and crisp Chardonnays.

"The sum of all parts should still be a better result than the quality of each individual part, otherwise why blend at all" - Chris Hatcher Chief Winemaker.
