Expert Reviews

If you’re looking for a slightly old-fashioned Aussie chardonnay, then Coonawarra is often a good place to look. This chardonnay from Katnook Estate has sweet, buttery aspect that many chardonnay fans miss/seek out.

It’s good to see someone still making this style of chardonnay. Bang for buck. Peach, oak-spice, butter and green melon. All mid-palate and not a lot of length, but its sweet sauciness has appeal. Tightens well through the finish. Can’t knock it.Rating 89 - Campbell Mattinson, Winefront, 28th May 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Light straw yellow.

Aroma

Fruit driven Chardonnay aromas of stylish peach and nectarine, along with zesty grapefruit. A subtle toastiness from oak adds a lovely layer of complexity.

Palate

An appealing array of flavours with peach, pineapple, hints of citrus and a touch of toast highlighed on the palate. The mouthfeel is subtly rich and creamy with elegant oak, enticing fruit and fine acid that is fresh and lingering.

Food Matching

Strongly-flavoured fish such as rockling or barramundi, lightly seasoned and pan-fried with a selection of your favourite sides would be delightful with this Chardonnay. Marinade tofu in soy, ginger, cumin and sesame oil then cook into a stir-fry with steaming hokkien noodles, shitake mushrooms and baby bok choy for a delicious vegetarian alternative.

Winery Profile

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Soil

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Climate

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.

2010 gave Coonawarra one of its earliest and best vintages ever, and once again Katnook Estate came up trumps with a Founders Block 2010 chardonnay from fruit that enjoyed below average rainfall and above average temperatures. This wonderfully elegant drop has peaches and melons to the forefront and nice chardonnay butteriness. A great drop at $18 with seafood in a creamy sauce. David Ellis, Central Coast Express - Gosford, 11th July 2012

Beautiful expression of chardonnay from Coonawarra. Toasty with touches of stone fruit and brioche. The creamy rich palate has good acid and a light touch of complex oak. The mouth feel is excellent with good length. Ideal as a current drinking chardonnay while that fruit intensity and youthfulness is still evident. Cellar: 2 years. Ray Jordan, West Australian, 27 September 2012
