Colors Demonic and Divine: Shades of Meaning in the Middle Ages and After

Herman Pleij

Publisher: Columbia University PressFormat: Hardcover

As the Middle Ages drew to a close, black and blue became the colors of choice for princes and the urban aristocracy. Bright colors gradually came to be regarded as the work of the devil, who had painted the world with his palette of tempting hues to cause vulnerable humanity to stray from the path to eternal salvation. It became the duty of every God-fearing person to avoid colorful display and to prefer sober shades a preference still seen today in the blacks and dark blues of evening wear and business attire.
