Soup for Ali
Publisher:Hachette New Zealand Ltd
In the All Blacks' all-important build-up to the 2007 Rugby World Cup, New Zealand's lock forward stocks took a hammering as one after another of our big lineout men fell to injury. First, it was James Ryan and Jason Eaton and then Ali Williams. In a sickening clash with French hard man Sebastien Chabal in the All Blacks' second test against France in June, Williams broke his jaw - just three months out from the World Cup. While the injury was never going to rule him out of the tournament, it did sideline him for six weeks and necessitate the wiring of his jaw. What followed was a plea from Ali Williams - through the NZRU's website, allblacks.com - for soup recipes to help him through “Lock Jaw”. The response was overwhelming, with more than 1000 recipes submitted to the website. Hence the book! Not only will the book reproduce 140 of the best recipes, it will also include a chapter (in Williams' own words) devoted to the injury, the rest and recuperation, the wiring of the jaw, a smallish preview of the World Cup (and how much Ali wanted to be at rugby's big show) and, of course, his thanks to all the Kiwis who helped him out.
