City Bushman: Henry Lawson and the Australian Imagination

Christopher Lee

Publisher:Fremantle Arts Centre Press

City Bushman maps Lawson's celebrity and the variety of uses to which his name and reputation have been put - the multi-faceted Lawson legend has been used by conservative, nationalist, socialist and radical interests to further their own agendas. This appropria- tion began with Lawson's State funeral, which was surrounded by a political ruckus, including Billy Hughes' attempt to develop his strategy of his affinity with the 'ordinary' Australian. Lawson's name continued to provide a source of capital for those with something to gain by claiming the national interest including Frank Hardy's attempt to reclaim him as a working-class hero.
