Wine Summary Image

The 2012 'War Horse' is only our second definitive Shiraz release in 122 years of winemaking. Names posthumously in memory and respect for the two hardworking Italian POW's from Campania who planted vines in 1944, and the tireless team of Pirramimma Clydesdale's...Anchor, Baron, Boxer, Minny, Doctor, Lightning and Stablemates that toiled our land. Whom are buried in the 'War Horse' vineyard, and to Louise Johnston's grandfather, George who served in the 9th Light Horse Brigade in Palestine and Egypt during World War I, the 9th were entirely South Australian's who took their own horse's with them.

Expert Reviews

Bouquet: briary blackberry, spicy plum, hints of vanilla, red frangipani, nutmeg and black olive. Palate: spicy mulberry, red licorice, cranberry, star of anise, dark chocolate, cedary oak and morello cherry. So says the back label. The wine in the glass is uncompromisingly full-bodied, verging on glutinous as it enters the mouth, but like Richard III's horse, fails in the heat of battle.

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
