Expert Reviews

UNMISTAKABLE sauvignon blanc, and very much a product of the 2012 vintage; the cool to mild year impacting with wonderful drive and thrilling fruit expression. At first a heady mix of passionfruit and an almost exotic creaminess, then its trademark twang of pink grapefruit that lasts and lasts. This flag bearer is better than ever this year.

Value: Can't disappoint | Food: Szechuan fish

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Pale and bright, with great clarity.

Aroma

Aromas of pink grapefruit, with a hint of basil, underline the freshness that this wine has in abundance.

Palate

On the palate the hallmarks of 2012 come the fore: intensity of fruit, length of flavour, and purity of varietal character. As always the style is a ripe expression of Sauvignon Blanc, reflected in the juicy midpalate texture. Bone dry and unoaked to maximize freshness.

Food Matching

Fresh prawn salad.

Winery Profile

5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.

Confession time. I wasn't a big fan of the last two vintages of the Adelaide Hills; most famous wine, eclipsed by the Chardonnay and Shiraz of the same estate. But the brand new 2012 is nothing less than stunning, returning to the classic purity that first put this wine on the map. Its citrus profile is spot on, spiced up with fresh passionfruit which lingers long on a soft, fine, mineral finish. Rating 93 - Drink to 2013 Tyson Stelzer, tysonsltezer.com
