Hand tended Bridgewater Mill vineyards in the Adelaide Hills produce premium chardonnay fruit from the warmer fringes to the coolest valleys on a variety of soil types.
Select chardonnay parcels were chilled and 'whole bunch' pressed, while the remainder were crushed, de-stemmed and chilled on their way to the press. The wine is complex and layered, dominated by varietal fruit and is a truly focused regional expression.
"This wine combines complexity, elegance and all that is great about Australian chardonnays. The stonefruit and citrus flavours are balanced by restrained oak flavours and great natural acidity."
Gazette, Kuta Port Douglas & Mossman - (6/SEP/2007)
2005 Bridgewater Mill Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is the second 100% Adelaide Hills release under this label. The four vineyards from whence the fruit is derived are all 15 years old and some are older. Two are in the Piccadilly Valley and the other two are on the warmer fringes of the valley.
All are managed by Petaluma to exacting standards of quality and yields are modest at 7 tonnes/hectare.
2005 was cooler than average in the Piccadilly Valley accumulating 1138 degree Celsius days for the growing season versus the long term average of 1172 heat degree days. In effect it was a very cool season because all months were 10% cooler than average except April and the fruit was harvested in the first week before the un-seasonal burst of mid April heat.
The Chardonnay grapes from Petaluma’s “distinguished vineyards” in the Adelaide Hills were hand harvested, crushed and chilled prior to gentle pressing to extract fresh, clean juice. After gravity settling, the relatively clean juice was seeded with Petaluma’s own natural yeast culture and malolactic bacteria culture and was fermented in Vosges oak barriques about 25% of which were new.
The sweeping and curving Adelaide Hills in South Australia are home to the cool fresh vineyards that create the Bridgewater Mill wines. Grown on vines up to 25 years old and at a cool 300-450 metres high, Bridgewater Mill wines are finely drawn with taut structures, pure fruit and crisp clean flavours.
The dramatic wine labels originate from a single artwork inspired by the sweeping horizon line of the definitive Adelaide Hills landscape. At the very heart of the Adelaide Hills lies Petaluma’s Cellar Door, the heritage listed Bridgewater Mill, est. 1860.

Butterscotch on the nose. A good aged chardonnay, with a good length and nutty honey flavour.
