Wine Summary Image

The success our neighbour (at Beechworth) Rick Kinzbrunner at Giaconda has had with Beechworth Charodonnay highlights the quality of this region.

Different soils, aspect, clones & age of vines on the Indigo property will lead our Chardonnay in a different direction but with minimum winemaker input, the region still expresses itself.

Following the successful 2012 Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay (two Trophies and three Gold medals) we needed a perfect winter and growing season in 2013. We got just that with 670mm rain through winter and then a perfect dry, warm summer. Picking was again early to capture the vibrant fruit characters.

Expert Reviews

"Produced from the high quality Dijon clones, whole bunch-pressed and barrel-fermented (33% new). The intensity of the white peach and grapefruit flavours has seen the wine soak up the oak, with a touch of struck flint as much as oak itself the consequence of barrel fermentation. Drink to 2023."95 points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2015, 1 August 2014

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Excellent colour, vibrant yellow/green.

Aroma

Minimal oak maturation. Pear and citrus aromas plus background ‘mealy’ oak. Some wild ferment edges of struck flint.

Palate

The palate carries these as well as some tannin and sweetness from the oak maturation. A little bit fuller than the 2012 but only half a percent higher in alcohol. Fine textured palate with bright citrus/tropical acidity. Modern Australian Chardonnay at its best.

Food Matching

Seafood to light meats.

Cellaring Pontential

Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.

Winery Profile

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'.

The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood's production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

“Our philosophy is to produce wine that focuses on the unique regional characteristics of the Hunter Valley and premium wine regions throughout Australia.” Iain Riggs, Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, Brokenwood Wines.

"This chardonnay is from one of Brokenwood Wines' finest sites - Indigo Vineyard - located near Beechworth at the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Pear and citrus aromas dominate the nose of this wine with a background of 'mealy' oak, also displaying some wild ferment edges of struck flint. On the palate the Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay 2013 is finely textured with bright citrus/tropical acidity and carries the same notes on the nose through, along with some tannin and sweetness from minimal oak maturation. This chardonnay is slightly fuller than the 2012 but only half a percent higher in alcohol, and is drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age." Drinks Trade Magazine, 25 July 2014
