Wine Summary Image

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion wine is definitely bewitching. It possess a great intensity that will delight you with its complexity (a mixture of red fruits) and the signature of its terroir in its empyreumatic notes (Havana cigars, chocolate, roasting, cedarwood, and so on.) On the palate, the wine is spherical and generous without a trace of aggressiveness. Its lengthens on silky tannins, making this wine so obvious that the taster succumbs to its charm.

Expert Reviews

The 2001’s juicy, peppery, meaty bouquet reveals notions of black currants, black cherries, tobacco leaf, and smoky barbecue. This expressive, medium-bodied, seductive La Mission has shed most of its tannin, revealing a gentle roundness. The wine builds incrementally in the mouth, finishing with impressive purity and length. Neither the biggest nor most flamboyant La Mission-Haut-Brion, it is a classic example to drink over the next 10-15 years while waiting for the bombastic, massive 2000 to evolve. Rating 92 - Drink 2012 - 2027, Wine Advocate (AUG/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

This wine has a very rich purple hue, deep and dense. The first whiff emphasizes the scent of the already assimilated woody element. Onenotes a touch of the bitter sweetness of liquorice combined with blackberries, blackcurrants and mulberries. In the mouth one finds an evident harmony which is divulging its structure bit by bit. There is softness with firmness. The vanilla extract slowly oozes from its bean as the succession of flavours meld and contribute to the complexity of the ripe tannin. Finally the aroma of truffle emerges alongside the nuances of liquorice and tobacco so typical in this wine. Such complexity along with this sort of tannin is characteristic of great wines of La Mission.

To taste rather between now and 2040.

Winery Profile

Pessac-Leognan A.C., Cru Classé de Graves

This is one of those Bordeaux properties which, by a show of hands and shouts of `aye`, could be promoted to First Growth one day. The wines are powerful - sometimes almost bullying and hectoring by nature - but, unlike those of its neighbour Chateau Haut-Brion, rarely seductive, and rarely with that lovely, ruminative flavour-memory which over blockbusters like Chateau Latour and Petrus always have.

The strength of these wines lies in a dark-plums-and-chocolate fruit braised with an earthy dryness which rarely opens out before ten years and often needs 20 or more to achieve its memorable tangle of tobacco, cedar and herb garden perfumes. Since 1983 it has been under the same ownership and management as Chateau Haut-Brion but the two estates have kept their own identities.

Surrounded by the Bordeaux suburbs, La Mission's 29 ha of vines are sliced through by the Bordeaux Arcachon main railway line.

In 2009 the white Chateau Laville Haut-Brion, a Graves Classed Growth and one of Bordeaux's top whites, was renamed La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc. Laville was a neighbouring estate of 2.5 ha of vines producing whites only and also owned by the American Dillon family, along with Chateau Haut-Brion. Unlike most other Pessac-Leognan whites which have a heavy percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, Laville places an emphasis of Semillon which accounts for 70% of the vineyard. This grape and an average vine age of over 50 years gives the wine an amazing aging potential as well as plenty of waxy, mouthfilling flesh and a rich, beeswaxy, honeyed boutquet. This bouquet is initially masked by the effect of 50% new oak, but after ten years or so it simply sweeps aside the oak to proudly dominate the wine.
