Appellation: Pauillac A.C., Haut Médoc, Bordeaux. First Growth of 1855 classification

A First Growth, it benefits from exceptionally favourable natural conditions, both in the quality of the soil and in the situation of its vines and their exposure to the sun.

Unctuous on the palate and amazingly supple, it mingles forward tannins, firm but mature, with consummately elegant flavours – caramel, vanilla, mocha, blackberry, wild berry fruit – that ooze charm.

Expert Reviews

”A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the opaque purple-colored, chunky 2001 Mouton-Rothschild does not possess the finesse and stature often achieved by this first-growth. It offers a tell-tale cassis-scented nose, and a monolithic, medium to full-bodied style with relatively high, austere tannin in the finish (a characteristics I also noticed in cask). A dry, angular, backward effort for the vintage, it should be forgotten for at least a decade. Let’s hope the fruit continues to expand and sweeten, but that’s no sure thing. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+.” 89 Points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #153, June 2004)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The wine has a lovely, deep, garnet red colour

Aroma

A nose which, though not yet fully open, reveals attractive fruit (cherry, raspberry) with airing, enfolded in the roast coffee, tobacco and spice notes of refined oak.

Palate

Unctuous on the palate and amazingly supple, it mingles forward tannins, firm but mature, with consummately elegant flavours – caramel, vanilla, mocha, blackberry, wild berry fruit – that ooze charm.

The finish, expansive and full of character, expresses all the richness of this very attractive vintage.

Viticulture and Winemaking

A First Growth, it benefits from exceptionally favourable natural conditions, both in the quality of the soil and in the situation of its vines and their exposure to the sun.

It receives meticulous attention, combining a respect for tradition with the latest techniques. Vine-growers and oenologists are specially employed to supervise every stage of cultivation.

Harvested entirely by hand, the grapes are collected in small open baskets. The wine is fermented in oak vats (Mouton is one of the last chateaux in the Medoc to use them) and then matured in new oak casks.

Winery Profile

Since 1933, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, located at Pauillac in the Médoc, has been motivated by a constant ambition: to make the world's finest wines, each in its own category, whether the châteaux wines for which it is responsible – the renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, a First Growth, and its distinguished lieutenants, Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac – or branded wines, like the famous Mouton Cadet.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA has also exported its know-how beyond Bordeaux: to the Pays d'Oc, with a range of varietal wines and, more recently, Domaine de Baron'arques; to California, with Opus One; and to Chile, with Almaviva.

One of the key factors behind the company's undisputed success is the art of blending, which it practises with exceptional skill. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the majority shareholder of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, works closely with the executive directors to maintain, modernise and develop the family business.
