Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The appearance is a deep, inky magenta/ black with hues of cherry red on the rim and viscous alcohol legs coating the side of the glass.

Aroma

The nose reveals deep earthy characters of dried herbs and anise spice with a sweet hint of licorice and roasted coffee. The overall bouquet has a captivating intensity. Voluminous but not overpowering, it delivers dry savory flavours with toasted oak, mocha and a chocolate decadence.

Palate

The palate opens with a weighty hit of dark berry, cherry and ripe plum fruit which is something of a surprise after the expectations of the bouquet. As the first sip warms on the tongue, it quickly opens to reveal the dry savoury flavours first anticipated. The mid palate delivers toasted oak chariness and spicy rum soaked raison while solid tannins give a complimentary dry mouth-feel and structure to the finish. It is a full and flavoursome wine yet has enough restraint to leave the palate searching for the next mouthful. On the first tasting of the finished wine, I was immediately heading for the barbeque and craving for a tender cut of rib eye or marbled wagyu steak. This Shiraz is ideally suited to any cut of red meat; barbequed, char grilled or pan fried. It has enough primary fruit character to balance the savoury notes, with pepper and spice adding complexity.

Winery Profile

With well over forty vintages under his belt, Chris’s career is full of many and varied experiences in the South Australian wine industry. Commencing in 1963, Chris became involved in Barossa viticulture working with 100 year old Shiraz, old bush vine Mataro and Tokay. In 1977 he joined Wolf Blass Wines as a Cellar Hand.Some two years later, recognising Chris’s management talents, attention to detail and natural ability to assess flavour profiles in pre-fermented and pre-finished wines, he was promoted to Cellar Master and in 1990 appointed Wolf Blass Winery Manager.

Working closely with Wolf Blass and the Senior Winemaker, Chris was responsible for the blending of many of the early Black Label, Grey and Yellow Label wines so sort after by today’s discerning consumers. In the decade preceeding Chris’s retirement in 2009, he oversaw the careers of many of today’s talented and well known winemakers.

As a producer with Wine Vintners, Chris now offers his wealth of winemaking experience and blending skill for your enjoyment. We commend his wonderful passion for great Barossa wines to your enjoyment.
