Wine Summary Image

Challenging vintage in terms of rain and vineyard pressure, and one where attention to detail and timely effort in the vineyard has returned the benefit. We crop thinned over half of the Chardonnay, leaving us a comfortable low crop which was able to ripen more quickly in the face of a rainy harvest.

This is the first release of the Hillcrest Chardonnay. In 2010 we used this block for our Blanc de blancs and were amazed with the concentration of fruit and incredible acid.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Pale straw green

Aroma

Pear and quince fruits, with hazelnut, nougat and a sense of sourdough bread.

Palate

Density and gentle power. Flavours of dried pears and fig are followed by matchstick and complex barrel fermentation characters, yet the wine shows only a little oak. Fine and long, the wines finds the balance between fruit weight, complexity and natural acid finesse.

Up to 10 years.

Winery Profile

Circe is a partnership inspired by growing up on the Mornington Peninsula and a love of Pinot Noir.

Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond met at Mount Langi Ghiran in 2007. After a vintage of Shiraz it was inevitable that the conversation would turn to any other varietal except Shiraz. With both of us growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, we were keen and curious as to what we could do with Pinot Noir from such great soil.

The name Circe derives from Homer and is a nice metaphor for the seductions – and perils – of Pinot Noir. Dan studied arts at university before realising it wouldn’t help him get a job. He then went on to oenology. At least his studies of the classics helped us develop a name. Good for something I guess?
