Wine Summary Image

Cape Mentelle takes a minimal approach towards this classic Margaret River blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The aim is to preserve as much fruit intensity and regional character as possible whilst providing a full flavoured distinctive white wine. The style accentuates the fresh fruit characters of both varieties with the added complexity and palate weight offered by a small portion of barrel fermentation.

WA - Margaret River

Western Australia
Country:

Expert Reviews

A 58/42% blend machine harvested at night; most cold-fermented in stainless steel, with 7% of the blend fermented in new and used French barriques; both components given 4 months lees contact. There is an array of citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavours, but it is the electricity of the intense palate that is the defining feature of the wine. Rating 94 - Drink by 2017, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2014).

Winery Profile

Cape Mentelle is a founding winery of Margaret River, established in 1970. One of the most remote wine regions in the world located in the south west corner of Australia, its natural beauty with spectacular coastlines captivates visitors. Here the maritime influence of the Indian Ocean ensures even temperatures, providing consistently excellent vintage conditions.

Cape Mentelle pioneered many of the region’s renowned wine styles and today is a benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines. Accolades including consecutive wins of Australia’s most prestigious wine trophy with the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon in 1983 and 1984, helped put Margaret River on the international wine map.

Building on the winery’s tradition of pioneering spirit and uncompromising commitment to excellence, an innovative young team is taking up the challenge to be simply the best.

This is the wine that brings home the bacon, as it were, for Cape Mentelle.

Quite perfumed with sweet herbs and Disprin, gooseberry, mixed citrus and fresh pineapple. Light and fresh, gentle and not at all abrasive, well measured herbal notes with toned down lime and pineapple flavours. Has a touch of chalkiness, clean acidity and a finish of good length – a bit like a gin and tonic. Rock solid. Rating 91 - Drink by 2018, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (AUG/2014).
