Wine Summary Image

This wine, together with the 2011 Kevin John Chardonnay, unequivocally demonstrates that the 2011 vintage at Cullen Wines was excellent for both white and red grape varieties. This Diana Madeline has outstanding and pristine fruit clarity.

As always, this flagship red wine is produced only from the very best barrels produced from the Bordeaux red grape varieties grown on the Cullen vineyards.

While the superb Cabernet Sauvignon produced in 2011 is the predominant variety in this Diana Madeline, the quality and complexity of this wine has been enhanced by the addition of carefully selected amounts of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The fruit was picked at Baumés ranging from 12.2° and 13.1° and the wine benefited from lengthy maturation in high quality French oak.

Expert Reviews

Drink 2031 - 2046 The marvels of superfine graphite structure, euphoric fragrance and enduring longevity achieved in the Cullen vineyard at just 12.5% alcohol are without precedent anywhere in the country. The sheer tannin shape of this wine is mesmerising, with enduring grip that will sustain it for at least three decades, yet the epitome of finesse and unashamedly medium-bodied. The clarity of violet perfume and depth of pristine red- and blackcurrants is faultless, perfectly framed in tobacco leaf, cedar, coffee bean and high cocoa dark chocolate. For the record, 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 4% malbec, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot – but I challenge you to spot any seam in its composition. One of the greatest and longest-lived Diana Madelines. Rating 98 - Tyson Stelzer, (JUL/2013)

Vibrant deep mulberry red, with a strong crimson meniscus.

Aroma

Amazing clarity and complexity, with a very attractive combination of cassis, chocolate, aniseed and ironstone aromas.

Plush silky and long. The palate represents a marvellous compote of fresh red fruits, made up of cassis, plum and cherry flavours and which are complemented by very fine and elegant tannins. The wine has a wonderfully long and persistent finish.

Winery Profile

Possibly Cullen's best known wine, this flagship red is named in honour of Diana Madeline Cullen, who along with husband Dr Kevin John Cullen, planted their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1971, in Wilyabrup, a sub-region just north of Margaret River township.

Additional varietals were planted in 1971, 1976 and finally in 1988, to both red and white varietals, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Petit Verdot, and a final planting in 1988. The Mangan Vineyard, situated just across the road from the Cullen Vineyard, was planted between 1995 and 1997, and contributes Malbec amongst other red and white varietals.

The wines these days are made by their daughter Vanya Cullen, who took over the role of winemaker in 1989, and has consistently been at the forefront of advancing Australian wine knowledge, just as her parents once did. Cullen received organic certification in 1998, and began the conversion to full biodynamic viticulture in 2003, with certification received in 2004 for the Cullen Vineyard, and 2008 for the Mangan Vineyard.

The Cullen Cabernet Merlot was renamed 'Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot' in 2003, in honour of her passing, and her enormous contribution to the Australian Wine Industry, being chief winemaker at Cullen from 1981 until passing the reigns to Vanya in 1989, and along the way becoming the first woman winemaker to win a trophy at the Royal Perth Show, in 1982.

The 'Cabernet Merlot' aspect was removed from the label in 2005, and the wine has simply been known as 'Diana Madeline' ever since.

Cullen's focus on viticulture, first and foremost, lends an elegance and intense concentration to the wines, with a focus on achieving tannin ripeness and balanced fruit. The Diana Madeline has excellent cellaring potential, and is indisputably a world-class Cabernet blend, and certainly one of the great wines of Australia, with significant interest on the secondary market for older vintages.

The name of this flagship wine was adopted in 2002 to honour Di Cullen. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 4% malbec, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot, it spent 18 months in French barriques. The bouquet is attractive but doesn't prepare you for the sheer intensity of the quite beautiful palate, with gloriously juicy redcurrant and cassis cradled by fine tannins and integrated oak. Rating 97 - Drink to 2031 James Halliday, 27 July 2013

Inky ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented red fruits, vanilla and rose on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy, focused and lithe, offering deeply concentrated but tangy redcurrant, bitter cherry and mocha flavors and a smoky note of black tea. A silky sweet and strikingly persistent finish features vanilla and bitter cherry pit.

94 points - Stephan Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds,July/August 2013

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot and aged 19 months in 48% new French oak barrels, the 2011 Diana Madeline is a medium to deep garnet-purple color and shows slightly muted notes of freshly crushed black currants, blackberries and red currants with hints of forest floor, cedar, bacon and lavender. Medium-bodied and tightly-wound on a very youthful palate, it is framed by medium to firm levels of grainy tannins and lively acid that supports the muscular fruit flesh. It finishes with great persistence. Rating 93+ points Drink it 2015 to 2026+. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, eRobertParker.com, #208, August 2013
