Expert Reviews

The wine opens with a strikingly fragrant and flowery bouquet, apple and lime blossom to the fore. The palate is intensely flavoured and prodigiously long, yet retains all the elegance and finesse of great riesling. Its very low pH of 2.9 enhances the minerality that provides structure, and guarantees and long life. Rating 96 - Drink by 2018 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2013)

Fresh aromatic nose with hints of passionfruit.

Palate

A clean crisp lime and apple palate underpinned by balanced acid and steely minerality. An elegant wine reflecting the terroir of the vineyard.

Food Matching

A versatile wine that will complement the majority of Chinese cuisine and fresh seafood.

Cellaring

25 years plus, although if you prefer fresh crisp wines drink it over the next 5 years.

Winery Profile

Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business. The winemakers are Ken and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in the 1860s.

The winery uses a combination of modern and traditional equipment and adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking, so that what you get in the bottle is as close as possible to what came out of the vine. We strive to produce premium quality wines that reflect the true characteristics of the grape and the land or 'terroir' in which they have been grown. The cool climate wine country near Canberra allows Helm Wines to produce unique styles of wines that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Helm Wines tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public School House which is listed by the National Trust and was the inspiration for the school bell featured on our label. It was once used for meetings of the Temperance League, where locals signed the pledge against alcohol.
