Wine Summary Image

The handpicked fruit was de-stemmed prior to going to tank. It went through a cold maceration phase of six to ten days prior to primary alcoholic fermentation and a post ferment maceration phase of up to 35 days. Each of the 12 parcels spent a varying time on skins, with the maximum period being 45 days. Once post ferment maceration was complete, the wine was pressed off, settled briefly then racked straight to barrels to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. We used a mixture of 25% new French oak and 75% older French oak barrels.

Still in their individual parcels, the wines were aged on lees until they were eventually racked in late 2009 when they were blended and returned to barrel. In total the wine spends 18 months in barrel, which added greatly to the complexity.

Expert Reviews

Matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% new, the 2009 ‘Paladin’ Pinot Noir has a pale ruby color and aromas of crushed cranberries and red currants with hints of bay leaf, underbrush and lavender. Medium bodied with an ample level of silky tannins, it has refreshing acidity running through the vibrant red berry flavors and providing lift to the long finish.

Rating 88 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW eRobertParker.com (NOV/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

2009 ‘Paladin’ Pinot Noir is a beautifully scented and well textured wine with a fragrance of ripe cherries and wild violets.

Palate

In the mouth the wine is weighty with green tea tannins, shows great length and beautiful balance between sweet ripe berry fruit and savoury characters and spices such as cloves, bay leaves and juniper berries. Barnyard characteristics and ‘leather saddle’ which will develop over time in the bottle.

A very attractive wine, lots of ‘pinosity’ and a fabulous companion with food.

Winery Profile

At Staete Landt we produce wine for the top end of the market, which is the segment of exclusive and (super) premium wines. With our team of passionate wine people we are highly committed to our land, our soils, our vines and our wines. We look after our vines and resources with great dedication in order to make wines that truly represent our unique terroir on the ‘Golden Mile’.

The ‘Golden Mile’ is the name given to a special strip of land in Marlborough located on the old riverbed soils in the sub region of Rapaura. This relatively small area of land has the most optimum wine growing conditions due to its unique microclimate. Some of the oldest and most famous Marlborough vineyards are planted in this area.

Staete Landt wines are 100% Estate grown, handcrafted from the 21 hectare (52 acres) Estate. We do not source fruit from other vineyards, nor do we sell grapes to other vineyards.
