The Escarpment “Insight Series” allows individual vineyard expression from exceptional sites within the Martinborough Geographic Indication. The vines which have grown this wine have been our pride and joy since being planted in 1999. This is the seventh release from The Escarpment Vineyard’s close planted vineyard on Te Muna Road, Martinborough. The spacing of 1.5m x 1m (6,700 vines/ha) is approaching the planting densities used in Burgundy from where the inspiration for this wine comes.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Fermented in wooden French cuvees, hand plunged and aged in 50% new French oak barriques the wine was given every priority during its elevation and now shows all the hallmarks of a grand young wine on its release in 2013. The season was exemplary in Martinborough with a warmer than average, dry summer allowing perfectly ripe fruit to be harvested in April 2011.

It is at the vanguard of Pinot noir style in the New World and should age gracefully for up to 10 years. The wine is a true reflection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker Larry McKenna.

Winery Profile

In 1999, Robert and Mem Kirby and Larry and Sue McKenna met for the first time, and quickly realized they shared a great passion for Pinot Noir, and the project to develop Escarpment Vineyard began. Collectively all four directors bring to Escarpment a world of experience, skill and understanding to the nurturing and making of fine, deliciously sublime wine.

In the search for the perfect vineyard site, Larry and Sue kept coming back to the Martinborough area, an area they knew intimately and which they were convinced offered the rich mix of elements required to grow and make fine New World wines, in particular Pinot Noir.

Escarpment Vineyard is planted on alluvial gravel terraces at the base of the Aorangi Ranges, the very hills made famous by the legendary Polynesian voyager who, according to Maori legend, discovered New Zealand. Kupe left his three canoes, Nga Waka, on top of the range, giving rise to the now familiarlandmark of the district, the three flat-topped hills on top of the range, which resemble unturned canoes. This warrior and his story provide inspiration for Escarpment Vineyard’s distinctive brand and logo, and for Larry and his winemaking team.

The flagship wine of Escarpment from their close-planted vineyard on Te Muna Road in Martinborough that went into ground in 1999. The wine sees 50% new French oak during its time of cellar maturation. This is the 6th release of the wine. It’s a wine that needs some time and further cellaring, it’s pretty closed at first glance, let it breathe and the wine comes alive – far out, there’s some power and punch here. Oak is set to fancy and high, but meshes into the dark, broody fruit character, offset by lacy, but stern tannin. Impressive in it’s impact across the palate, twiggy through the finish, mouth puckering and complex. There’s lots to chew on, in a way, but the fruit shows many layers of pleasurable complexity. Super. Rating 95+ Drink : 2013 - 2026, Mike Bennie, Wine Front (MAY/2013)
