Wine Summary Image

Our JSM was named after the decorated army Captain James Stanley Malpas who was born in Willunga in 1873. His family lived in what is now our cellar door cottage and ‘Stan’ (as he was known) carved his initials in the stone lintel above the front door in 1891 when he was 18 years old.

He studied at Roseworthy Agricultural College where he graduated as a Gold Medalist. In 1915 he enlisted in the AIF and was posted to Gallipoli where he was promoted to the rank of Captain. A few months later he developed typhoid fever and returned to Australia to recover.

The following year he rejoined his battalion (27th) in Gallipoli but was wounded in action with a severe gunshot wound to left axilla (armpit) with nerve injury and a superficial wound to right forearm. He was then sent to England for convalescence and returned to Australia three months later in February 1917. He was discharged from the AIF in August of the same year with 25% incapacity.

‘Stan’ was awarded the Military Cross for “conspicuous gallantry in action. He displayed great resourcefulness and dash in getting his company out of an almost impossible position in the trenches.” ‘Stan’ died in 1937 at the age of 64 and his grave can be found in the township of Willunga.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep purple.

Aroma

The nose reveals an enticing array of musk, red cherry, plums, smoky toast and roasted nuts with a herbaceous lift. Integrated cinnamon and nutmeg aroma’s derived from barrels used in fermentation adds to the wines complexity.

Palate

A rich, full flavoured front and mid palate is laden with red cherry, plums, blackcurrant and raspberries layered with hints of vanilla and toasty oak. The wines luscious fruit is framed by long textural Cabernet tannins in combination with balanced and elegant oak tannins. A great drinking wine of complexity and substance.

Cellaring

This wine is styled to be food friendly and we suggest it is ideal for enjoying with food in restaurants or at home. Subsequent cellaring for 2 to 8 years will give a softer more complex wine.

Winery Profile

It all began when a group of medicos decided to realise a lifelong passion - creating a wine from bare earth and sunshine. The earth was found at McLaren Vale, one of South Australia's premier wine regions, renowned worldwide for its Shiraz and other red wines. The sunshine was free.

When Jim and Helen Watts bought the 32 hectare Fox Creek Vineyard property in 1984, they were advised against planting vines as the soils were heavy clay. The property had previously been used for growing barley and grazing sheep. Undeterred by the sceptics, they selected and planted fine quality cuttings and nurtured the young vines. Their labours bore fruit - extraordinary good quality fruit - that was lovingly converted into supreme quality wines. Under the skilled guidance of the winemakers, the wines came to life!

Leader of the pack and the first wine made at Fox Creek was our 1994 Shiraz, which won the Trophy for the best wine at the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 1995. McLaren Vale is the gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula and is home to some of the best produce and vineyards in the country. With over 76 wineries in McLaren Vale along, visitors can spend days experiencing some of the best wines in the world.

Fox Creek has three company vineyards or approximately 60 hectares of vines. The vineyards are within a range of 5 kilometres, near the village of Willunga. On our vineyards we grow most common grape varieties. The red varieties are our specialty, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The white varieties grown are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho and Semillon.

Fox Creek has always protected and enhanced the areas surrounding the vineyards with plantings of indigenous native trees. These provide habitat, food and shelter for native birds. Our focus is to be environmentally friendly and only use sustainable practices if possible. We strive to minimise the use of any chemical or other artificial agents.

All of our vineyards are hand pruned to control vigour. Hand pruning also controls cropping levels which are kept quite low, enabling us to produce small berries full of concentrated flavour and colour.
