Wine Summary Image

I probably don’t need to say too much about this wine as it is one of our best sellers and there are a lot of people eagerly awaiting its return, after being out of stock for quite some time. Merlot is generally looked down on as an inferior variety by the majority of the wine industry and is the butt of many jokes and it can be hard to find a good Merlot in Australia. But that’s not the varieties fault, until recently we’ve had inferior clones in Australia, being grown in the wrong climates and overcropped with unsympathetic winemaking. However Merlot seems to thrive in the Alpine Valleys (provided the yield is controlled) and we hope to educate the rest of Australia about just how good Merlot can be.

Expert Reviews

Considering that 300mm of rain fell in early Mar, after the white wines had been picked but before the reds, this is a remarkable outcome. Cassis, plum, black olive and spice fruit flavours tumble over each other, backed by surprisingly good tannins and an infusion of vanillan oak. Rating 90 - Drink by 2018 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

This wine displays plummy fruit aromas with hints of chocolatey oak and savoury olive notes.

Palate

The palate is generous and fleshy with dark spice and blackcurrant held together by soft, fine tannins.

Food Matching

Merlots are often criticised as being thin and simple, this wine is anything but! A versatile food wine that will go with any red meat, but I have a feeling it would be particularly good with Kangaroo.

Cellaring

This wine will continue to develop with medium term cellaring of 5 – 10 years.

Winery Profile

Like all great success stories, the story of the birth of Boynton’s Feathertop Winery is filled with passion, adventure, disappointment and fear but above all strength, determination and an individuals belief in his dream despite the odds.

Boyntons was established in 1989 by Kel Boynton and today remains a family owned business.Feathertop Wines captures the essences of nature and the beauty and crispness of the Alpine Valleys which surround the winery.

The release of Feathertop seven years ago was an exciting time. This new label moving away from Boynton's Wines, is seen to reflect a close tie into the environment that defines our wines.

Feathertop represents Mountain Feathertop which is the commanding feature in our Alpine Valley region. The mountain not only visually shelters our valley and influences the air currents, but it has defined the soil structure in which we grow our grapes, as well as providing us the fresh Alpine spring water that flows and nourishes our vines. These environmental conditions are integral in the process of our wines, they form the rock that we stand on.
