Wine Summary Image

Riesling from Calvert & The Elms vineyards was carefully hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The fermentation was stopped by chilling when the optimal balance was achieved between the acidity, alcohol and residual sugar (56g/L). Careful winemaking with minimal processing highlights the crisp natural acidity and the Riesling characters are delicately poised in the low alcohol of 9.5%

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

Inviting aromas of citrus, spice and mineral.

Palate

A diverse range of sweet tropical fruits dominate the mid-palate which is engaging and comforting. The initial burst of sweetness is quickly and seamlessly

integrated by the racy acidity provided by our unique climate. This contributes to the wine’s considerable length and intrigue with the residual sugar (56 g/L) being hardly noticeable amongst the delicate framework (9.5% alc).

Winery Profile

Beginning with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road’s story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture ensures that the fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, whilst the entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine’s expression of its terroir. No additions or adjustments are performed unless they absolutely need to be. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which Felton Road believe express the authenticity and complexity of their unique vineyards.

Felton Road farms three vineyard properties totalling 32 hectares in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Meticulous summer management of a single vertical shoot positioned (VSP) canopy ensures even and early fruit maturity. Shoot thinning, shoot positioning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning and harvest are all carried out by hand to ensure optimum quality fruit. Cover crops are planted between rows to assist in vine balance and to improve soil health and general biodiversity.

Winemaker Blair Walter

Winemaker Blair Walter continues to work his magic with the recent releases from Central Otago’s most famous Estate. There’s not a wine less than excellent in the bunch, but these days it would be more of a story if there was. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate#191 (OCT/2010)

This label represents more than two-thirds of Felton’s riesling production and 2013 is a particularly generous edition. Layers of white peach, mandarin peel and ginger presence are streamlined by pretty lemon blossom aromatics and hints of fennel and granny smith apple. Beautifully fine acidity and mineral structure are intricately balanced by well-gauged sweetness (56g/L). Rating 94 - Drink 2014 - 2018 - Tyson Stelzer, tysonstelzer.com

Trademark apricot notes but a sweeter style. The persistent fruit gives a finish as long as Felton Road's dry version, but broader - like a glass of apricot patisserie. Rating 17.5/20 (91/100) - Drink 2014 - 2016 Decanter Magazine (APR/2014)

Felton Road Bannockburn Central Otago Riesling Estate-grown on mature vines, this is a gently sweet wine with deep flavours cut with fresh acidity. It offers more drink-young appeal than its Dry Riesling stablemate, but invites long-term cellaring. Tank-fermented mostly with indigenous yeasts, it is bottled with 20 to 60 grams per litre of residual sugar. The 2013 vintage (5 Star), grown in The Elms and Calvert vineyards, is a 'Mosel' style, according to winemaker Blair Walter.

Light-bodied (8.5 per cent alcohol), it has lovely intensity and vigour, with rich, citrusy, limey flavours, a hint of sherbet, plentiful sweetness (55 grams/litre of residual sugar) and a tight, lasting finish. It should blossom for a decade. Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2014
