From the exceptionally cool Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills, this chardonnay is deliberately restrained. Succulent white peach, melon and grapefruit characters create a mineral, focused wine that is fresh and refined, with a deep underlying complexity.
A very youthful, reserved style of chardonnay, with restrained herbal aromas which build interest the more you taste. It’s crisp and alive, with tight lemon flavours and underlying complexities, which emerge as you dig deeper. Lovely wine with a big future. Rating 93 - Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine (August/September 2011)

The 2009 Grosset Chardonnay has a youthful exuberance, tangy white peach and nectarine flavours, vibrant, juicy fleshy texture and zingy acidity that cleanses. There’s impressive integration of oak and fruit at a young age, the richness and concentration you’d expect, plenty of weight and a lively raciness that binds it all together. More enticing at a young age than usual, it has complex minerally notes, some slatey characters, and a tight leanness which suggests that it will age well.

Winemaking Note
The Grosset Piccadilly Chardonnay is hand picked, barrel fermented in French barriques and then left to mature in those barrels for nearly twelve months, followed by a further twelve months in bottle before release.
Followers of the Grosset Chardonnay will notice a consistency of style especially between the most recent three vintages of the wine. Jeff sees these as a return to the clearly defined style that he made in the 1990s: finer, lean, tighter and slightly lower in alcohol. Often shy and restrained on release and needing patience and time to reveal themselves, the Piccadilly Chardonnays come into their own by being more ageworthy than most of their peers.
Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery producing seven highly regarded premium wines each vintage.
Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide.
While in its third decade, annual production is capped at 10,000 cases (dozens), predominantly produced from twenty hectares of estate vineyards. Remaining small and focused has allowed Grosset to preserve the character and individuality of the wines, developing a significant international profile by producing wines deemed consistently outstanding, benchmarks in their class.
Grosset Wines’ philosophy has remained steadfast over thirty years. The emphasis is on purity of fruit. Vineyards are hand-tended, and each bunch of grapes is harvested at optimum ripeness. The winemaking process is gentle and uncomplicated. With dedication, discipline and the application of knowledge garnered through decades of experience, the result is the finest expression of variety and place.

Quartz-green; a crisp, incisive and pure bouquet is precisely reflected by the palate, its grapefruit and mineral characters bordering on the austere, like a fine Corton or Chablis.Rating 95 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUL/2011)
Jeffrey Grosset’s best-known white wines are his outstanding Clare Valley rieslings, but don’t overlook this superb chardonnay. It has a complex nose that threads white peach, nutty, yeasty and creamy notes together in subtle harmony. In the mouth it’s understated in flavour, but its texture and length give it great interest and elegance. Ageing? Drink over three years. Tightly defined acidity draws out the finish of this flavour-concentrated style, layered with grapefruit, white peach and pear blossom.Rating 93 -Tyson Stelzer Wine 100 in WBM Magazine (June/2011)
I’m regularly a fan of Grosset chardonnay and this release did not disappoint. Pure and powerful. Grapefruit, white peach, modest spicy oak and driving, citrussy acidity. A wine of texture, power, seamless fruit/oak/acid integration and noteworthy length. 14 percent alcohol but even at room temperature it doesn’t distract. A very impressive wine. Score could easily be on the meagre side.Rating 93+ Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front (14/FEB/2011)
