Wine Summary Image

The 2002 vintage was the smallest in ten years as a result of winter drought and cool weather at flowering, and the best wines were produced from old vines able to draw on deep root systems to tap reserves of moisture. In addition, the summer was relatively cool, which added to the acid structure and lent a fresh vibrancy to the fruit.

This gran reserva was carefully elaborated using the traditional method of carbon maceration, with entire grapes sealed in a stainless steel deposit where they undergo alcoholic fermentation.

The process produces an excellent wine with an intense colour while preserving the grapes’ natural aromatic character. Then aged in American and French oak barrels for 36 months, and then kept in bottles for a minimum of 24 months or until it reaches its optimal maturation.

Grays Tasting Panel Review

The nose is very inviting, blueberries, mocha and the faint umani-ness of wine that has spent an extended amount of time in barrel.

The palate has an intense sweetness upfront. Quince, blueberries and mocha, before it rolls into cola, sarsaparilla and liquorice. There are oxidative characters on the palate as well, a spicy yeastiness. Even with the age the tannins are still firm and drying and the acidity cleansing. Mouthfeel it good and the length long.

Drink with a slow roasted Castilian lamb shoulder and potatoes.

Winery Profile

At one of the highest points in Rioja Alavesa, in the village of Elvillar de Álava, the Meruelo family created Bodegas Heredad de Baroja in 1964. The winemaking cellar itself was built with a single purpose in mind: turning top-quality Tempranillo grapes into classic expressions of elegant Rioja Alavesa wine.

The Meruelo Family

Way back in the 1790s, Ribera del Duero had double the number of hectares of vineyards now planted. Fernando Meruelo (born 1953) is the third generation of a family of winemakers. He was born in Ribera del Duero and his Great-grandparents owned vineyards for centuries. In the 1970s the family moved from Ribera to the heart of Rioja Alavesa, where his Father was working as an oenologist for the regions´ leadings producers. When Fernando finished studying oenology, he joined his brother Tony Meruelo - the Chief Winemaker - and founded Bodegas Heredad de Baroja in 1982, so named because they both are keen on Pio Baroja, one of Spain´ s most awarded poets and playwright’s. Fernando´s dream was always to grow old vines and make premium wines under his own brand. After studying he briefly consulted other producers, but the pursuit of this dream and the challenge to keep on the Meruelo´s tradition led him to found Heredad de Baroja – a brand focused on the traditional Rioja style.
