The Hinton family are originally from Alexandra where they have grown stone fruit for over 100 years.

The first wine grapes were planted in 1997 on a hilly site ideally suited to Pinot Noir, which is the predominant variety. Since then, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Gewürztraminer and Viognier have been added.

Winery Tasting Notes

Another rich ruby red vintage with silky tannins, good length and a generous aftertaste. It is a medium bodied wine with hints of delicious savoury oak and just a touch of spice. A very approachable Pinot Noir with sweet spicy aromas.

Winery Profile

Hinton Estate was established by the family that has grown premium stonefuit in Central Otago for over 100 years. The first vines were planted in the late 1990’s and Howie Hinton, a fifth generation orchardist, is the viticulturist and winemaker. The vineyard was established on steep north facing slopes where the terrain is too tough for summer fruit yet ideal for grapes, especially pinot noir and aromatic white varieties. The winemaking philosophy matches that of the family’s fruit operation, where only perfect fruit is accepted. The ethos is based on growing quality grapes and enhancing natural flavours through utilisation of simple, traditional winemaking techniques and the best technical innovation.
