Wine Summary Image

Howard Park Wines was launched in 1986 with the release of the 1986 Howard Park Riesling, since this inaugural vintage, the style and philosophy of the Howard Park Riesling has remained unchanged and is the benchmark for Howard Park and the Great Southern regional expression. The focus being to source the most pristine Riesling from premier vineyards in the Great Southern region of Western Australia to produce a wine showcasing the best of this variety from this isolated region ideally suited to Riesling.

The wine is selected from only the best batches of free-run juice; these wines demonstrate great potential for slow ageing and the development of toasty complexity and greater mouth-feel.

Howard Park’s Great Southern Riesling is consistently rated as one of Australia’s best Rieslings. It is listed as Australia’s 4th most collected Riesling from a survey conducted by Wine Ark out of 3 million bottles of wine in cellars across the country. It also has a longstanding track record of being noted as ‘Outstanding’ in James Halliday’s annual Wine Companion.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Brilliant and pale lemon yellow in colour

Aroma

Intense and lifted aromas of zested lemon/lime citrus and fresh pears.

Palate

The palate is full of fresh citrus, nashi pear and golden delicious apple flavours that give depth and richness. Whilst defined by these rich fruit flavours, the palate is guided by a fine, citrus acidity that adds length and finish to the wine.

Cellaring

In its youth, the Great Southern Riesling is bright in style, full of abundant fresh fruit, a tight citrus acidity. In time the wine will develop a nut praline and poached citrus and apple richness whilst retaining its linear acidity.

Howard Park Rieslings will cellar for more than 10 years.

Medals & Trophies

Winery Profile

History

Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: "I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines". This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.

Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.

"We have worked towards establishing Howard Park as a premium family wine company. This success will be measured by the work we do now for future generations."  Jeff Burch

Our Philosophy

This founding two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park's wine making philosophy which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new. Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. As a result our Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.

"We have a simple philosophy; premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Simply, we go to wherever the fruit grows best." Jeff Burch
