Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The colour is an intense deep red with a vibrant hue of crimson and purple on the rim and long viscous legs coating the side of the glass.

Aroma

At room temperature the bouquet fills the air with a luscious savoury sweet combination of toasty oak, red berries and heady alcohol. Deeper in the glass are more complex aromas of spiced raisins, cedar wood and roast coffee grounds with hints of dark chocolate.

Palate

The palate shows great richness and sophistication with ripe blackberry and plum flavours while the mid palate has more cool climate characters of blackcurrant and blueberry. There’s hints of anise and licorice spice with a lift of vanilla and coconut. The mouth-feel is full and round with velvety tannins giving a smooth texture and small oak adding a smoky, earthy intensity. The finish goes on forever leaving a sensation of completeness and satisfaction.

Food Matching

A sumptuous platter of fine farmhouse cheese and gourmet Barossa delicacies like spicy mettwurst, garlic sausage, pickled gherkins and Pheasant Farm pate would make a great partner to this wine.

Cellaring Potential

This is a very powerful wine and has enjoyed expert winemaking and skillful oak maturation. It clearly has a sophisticated pedigree and will develop beautifully with age. It needs plenty of breathing after opening and would benefit from decanting. The screw cap closure will prevent any risk of cork taint but it will need cool dark conditions for extended cellaring. It’s a wine that will comfortably survive till the next generation.

Grays Tasting Panel Review

This has all the hallmarks of a great Barossa Shiraz. Big, rich and powerful, but not overblown, not jammy. Perfumed nose and velvety palate. An amazing wine at double the price. Don't forget to let it breathe!

Its colour is a deep, dark purple. The nose is intense with chocolate, raspberries, anise, coffee and hints of black pepper around the edges.

Glorious on the palate, blackberries, plums and fresh herbs. Anise and chocolate close it out. Perfectly balanced and long smooth finish.

It would be fantastic with roast eye fillet, bearnaise sauce and cream cheese potatoes. Yum.

Winery Profile

For nearly three generations the name Stockhausen has been synonymous with the production of fine wine in Australia and Hans Stockhausen wines of the Barossa are no exception. With fruit sourced from old Barossa vineyards and wines produced only if the varietal fruit parcels display outstanding characters, combined with excellent vineyard management and minimal intervention winemaking, resulting wines are limited releases masterpieces with minimal filtration or additives during winemaking.Hans Stockhausen wines take time to evolve and allow all elements to become integrated. The aging process will continue in bottle and over time this wine will develop a light bottle crust. We recommend you allow it to breathe for an hour before consuming or decant.
