Expert Reviews

Barrel ferment and lees action here with the name recalling that old English kingdom, Aquitaine, now better known as Bordeaux. And in the same spirit as Leonard Nimoy presenting ‘In Search Of: Great Mysteries of the World’, I ask you “Could Mark Messenger BE the greatest winemaker in Margaret River?”

Lime, lemon and grapefruit with some ginger ale spice, nuts and nettle – a veritable summer picnic of a wine. It’s smooth and ‘elegant’ but has a tangy citrus bite with its fine intense acidity and a long clear spicy finish. Harmony and sophistication. Beautiful interpretation of the regional stalwart. Rating 94 - Drink 2013 - 2017 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (JAN/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The combination of the climate & soil of Margaret River has many similarities to that of Bordeaux. Hence it is not surprising that the blending of semillon & sauvignon blanc works so well.

At Juniper Estate we are aiming to produce a fine, elegant and complex wine with medium term cellaring potential. The use of “free range” yeast, barrel fermentation in tight grained French oak and maturation on yeast lees are used to build texture, structure and layered complexity without dominating the fruit characters maintaining elegance in the wine. We’ve named this special wine ‘Aquitaine’ in honour of this French region that inspired us.

Winery Profile

Juniper Estate is a producer of premium wines in Wilyabrup, the heart of the Margaret River winegrowing area. It is one of the oldest vineyards in the area. No sub-region has been historically more important in the success of Margaret River than Wilyabrup, where the first vineyards were planted and wineries built and which continues to be home to a disproportionately large number of famous, usually small, vineyards.

Winemaker

Mark Messenger has been the Winemaker at Juniper Estate since 1998. He has responsibility for production of all Juniper wines and is supported by an experienced team in the winery and the vineyard. Mark was Assistant Winemaker at Cape Mentelle, in Margaret River, from 1990 to 1998. Mark’s experience lies in producing premium Margaret River wines, using the best quality grapes, oak and other materials, and that is his mission at Juniper Estate.

“A new release from Juniper, this blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc has been barrel fermented and lees aged to create a stylish, complex and integrated dry white that offers handy lemon and lime fruits with biscuity complexity, very much in a savoury style. The palate has a smooth textural build amid tremendously powerful acidity, lemon and grapefruit flavours, some grilled nuts to close. Lovely new addition to the project”. 94 points Nick Stock, SMH and The Age Good Wine Guide 2013

“The region’s famous white blend has a bordeaux-inspired twist, with 10 months on lees adding elegance and complexity to the citrus-driven palate. Whole-bunch pressed and 10 months on oak means time is on its side”.

94 points David Prestipino, Top Drops - STM Magazine, 27th January 2013

“A new wine from Juniper. This is a blend of Higher Plane sauvignon blanc and Juniper semillon. It has been whole-bunch pressed into French oak for fermentation and extended maturation for 10 months. It’s one of the new breed of Margaret River blends and it works really well. The oak adds such a dimension with its added complexity and depth. An excellent wine with great cellaring potential.

94/100 Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2013

“With a few exceptions I find tasting sauvignon blancs a chore but, by adding semillon to the mix, Margaret River producers change the equation. That applies here with this blend of 60 per cent semillon and 40 per cent sauvignon blanc. The wine is green-tinted light gold and has grassy scents. Crisp lemony flavour shows on the front palate and gooseberry, mineral and lime zest fruit characters integrate with subtle cashew oak on the middle palate. River stones acid refreshes at the finish.”4.5 Stars/Glasses John Lewis, Newcastle Herald, 24th April 2013
