Wine Summary Image

An excellent 2010 vintage in the Clare Valley has allowed us to create our third ‘Tregea‘ Reserve Cabernet in ten years. Warm days and cool nights over the harvest period slowed down the ripening process, maximising the development of the wines blackcurrent and tobacco flavours, fine tannins and seamless natural acid contribution. Kilikanoon’s finest Cabernet in its portfoilio with less than 300 cases produced.

Low yielding fruit from two vineyards, one positioned in the warmer Leasingham district and the other around our cellar door in the cooler, more elevated Skillogalee valley, were allowed to fully ripen, before hand harvesting, fermentation on skins to dryness and basket pressing to new French oak hogsheads. Bottling occurred without fining or filtration.

Expert Reviews

Impenetrable colour, purple hue; epic in its concentration and purity, the fruit is pure cassis seasoned with fine oak, and a touch of sage; the palate is juicy on entry, with the densely packed tannins barely having a voice with the succulent fruit on offer; will age with grace. Rating 96 - Drink by 2030 - Ben Edwards, Wine Companion (FEB/2013)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is scented of black currant, cinnamon stick and nutmeg over cedar and pencil lead notes. With tons of taut fruit, the medium-bodied wine has lifted acidity and firm, very fine tannins. It is a very pretty and impressive wine that finishes long. Drink 2014 to 2022+. Rating 93+ Drink 2014 - 2022 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (FEB/2013)
