Wine Summary Image

The McLaren Vale Scarce Earth Project is designed to celebrate and understand some of the region’s best Shiraz vineyards. Each of the resultant wines involved has its own particular identity. The 2010 Scarce Earth Project wines have been through 3 separate tasting panels to ensure that they reflect their sense of place with minimal winemaking intervention.

The vineyard Kangarilla Road has chosen for their Scarce Earth Project Shiraz is within view of Maslin Beach and it’s geology is from the Eocene (34-56 million years ago) and is on Blanche Point Formation which is a marine fossil rich calcareous siltstone/limestone.

Whilst the vineyard is close to the sea, the vines are reasonably protected by sandhills and vegetation but there is still a level of stress for the vines in their quest for water which in turn adds to the quality of the fruit.

Expert Reviews

Full crimson-purple; the vines are grown on the grey and red mottled alluvial soil of Maslin Beach; the wine has exceptional elegance and balance, with spice and licorice nuances of a different tone to the other very good Kangarilla shirazs from this vintage; the finish is long, the balance impeccable. Rating 95 - Drink by 2030 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

The wine itself has an amazing deep colour with purple/blue hues.

Aroma

There are aromas and flavours of chocolate, earth and dark rich berry fruit of the forest that wrap around an amazing structure integrating fine French oak.

Palate

What we believe is fascinating and perhaps the influence of the geology on the wine, are the subtle minerality and slight iodine notes

that are found hidden within the palate.

Winery Profile

Kangarilla Road winery is a partnership between Kevin and Helen O’Brien. While the wines show the generosity of the McLaren Vale region, they also have a unique Kangarilla Road style, the white wines fragrant and aromatic and the reds an elegant expression of their variety. The Kangarilla Road philosophy remains unchanged: “To produce wines that we enjoy drinking – wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and especially with friends.”

This is a McLaren Vale shiraz of potent intensity and powerful fruit, with a particulary dark, impenetrable black hue and vibrant purple rim. A dense slick of liquorice and black fruits of all kinds drive long into a honed finish, toned refreshing with piquant acidity and firm, finely textured tannins. Rating 92 - Drink 2020 - 2025 Tyson Stelzer
