Expert Reviews

Bright yellow-green; the sheer purity and intensity of this wine is remarkable, even in the context of its imperious ancestry; it has its own flavour and tactile characters stemming from the perfect balance between the white peach and grapefruit flavours carried through the very long and detailed palate by bright acidity. Rating 97 - Drink by 2030, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2013).

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

A deceptively complex and incredibly youthful nose that features cut pear, fresh quince and lemon blossom. A savoury line is also evident with sesame brittle, cinnamon stick, rice wafer and hints of cornmeal.

Palate

On the palate, woven layers of intense white fleshed fruits, diligent oak handling and effortless texture meet seamlessly and are driven by a mineral saline acid spine. Pears, grapefruit and white nectarine are the key fruits of the palate, which is focused with remarkable length and possesses amazing longevity.

Winery Profile

Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district, consistently produces wines that rank with the world's finest.

In 1972, following an extensive search for the area most suitable to produce the best varietal wines in Australia, legendary American winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard.

Originally a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved, under the direction of Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Robert Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor.

A nursery was planted in 1974 and the initial vineyards were deep-ploughed, deep-ripped, emptied of stone, planned, pegged, measured, marked and eventually planted by hand over a five year period from 1975.

Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, and now under the direction of two generations of the founding family, Leeuwin now exports to over 30 countries.

The 2010 Art Series Chardonnay is redolent of warm peaches, toasted almonds and apple tart with hints of cedar and wet pebbles. Medium to full-bodied and very concentrated with layers of stone fruit, toast and nut flavors, it has a lively backbone of acidity, satiny texture and long finish. Rating 95+ - Drink by 2019, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com (AUG/2013).

Recent vintages of Leeuwin Chardonnay have been tighter and finer, still the power, but with a little more finesse. Pear, lemon and cinnamon oak with a little smoky barrel work – typical Leeuwin smells, though finer. Medium to full bodied with a distinct lemony tang and cut to the acidity, spice, Teddy Bear biscuits, savoury toasty elements – gently done – and a fine long zesty finish of impeccable length. You get the power from the vineyard, but with less noise from alcohol and winemaking than some earlier vintages. Excellent release. Rating 95 - Drink by 2020+, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (APR/2013).
