Expert Reviews

The fragrant red fruits of the expressive bouquet leave no doubt about the harmony and elegance of this medium-bodied wine, proceeding to taste it is barely necessary, unless it be the fine filigree of spicy tannins and a waft of new oak. Rating 96 - Drink by 2026, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

The wine displays aromas of blueberries, Satsuma plums and mulberries, laced with lifted violets, ground pepper, mocha, anise and Asian five spice.

Palate

A textured palate showing great depth and intensity, it is laden with plums, dark cherries and mulberries. Subtle nuances of cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla pod are threaded throughout the palate. The palate has immense length and persistence, with definition highlighted by a silky and long tannin structure.

Winery Profile

Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district, consistently produces wines that rank with the world's finest.

In 1972, following an extensive search for the area most suitable to produce the best varietal wines in Australia, legendary American winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard.

Originally a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved, under the direction of Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Robert Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor.

A nursery was planted in 1974 and the initial vineyards were deep-ploughed, deep-ripped, emptied of stone, planned, pegged, measured, marked and eventually planted by hand over a five year period from 1975.

Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, and now under the direction of two generations of the founding family, Leeuwin now exports to over 30 countries.

It’s Leeuwin Estate, though the fruit does not come from the estate anymore.

Pepper and spice, exotic perfume, blue fruits and plum, some meat and cedar. Medium bodied, meaty, savoury and spicy, more of the plum and mixed berries, grainy tannin shapes it up, and acidity is pretty firm through the wine. Floral and spicy on the finish. Very composed and controlled. Excellent wine. Rating 93 - Drink by 2021+, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (NOV/2014).

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2011 Art Series Shiraz has a pretty perfume of crushed cherries, black raspberries and roses with hints of star anise, Szechuan pepper and smoky bacon. Medium-bodied with plenty of juicy black fruit flavors and complimentary spices, it has a medium level of rounded tannins and just enough acid, finishing long. Rating 90+ - Drink by 2018+, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com (AUG/2014).
