Wine Summary Image

The tradition of paying tribute to the winner of a Grand Prix with a bottle of champagne began in 1950.

That year, Reims hosted the first ever French Grand Prix at the Gueux circuit overlooking the rolling Champagne countryside. It was only right that the winner received a bottle of champagne; even the spectators who flocked to the course would share a bottle over their picnics. So began the love story between the most demanding of wines and the most adventurous of races.

The bottle was warm when the winner of the 1966 Le Mans 24-hour race, Jo Siffert, climbed onto the podium. The cork popped out unexpectedly with the pressure, spraying a fine shower over the delighted audience below. The following year Dan Gurney, winner of the same race, deliberately repeated Siffert’s gesture.

Expert Reviews

Mumm's workhorse label delivers strong Pinot Noir fruits on the nose, with some savoury chalky and yeasty complexity. The palate is bold and forthright in both flavour and structure, delivering power and richness thanks to plenty of reserve wine, fleshy and assertive finish. Rating 91 - 1 Glass, Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2011

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

This champagne is a brightly sparkling, light golden yellow liquid with an abundance of fine and elegant bubbles.

Aroma

The nose reveals initial aromas of ripe fresh fruit (white and yellow peaches, apricots), tropical notes (lychee and pineapple). It then opens up with the fragrance of vanilla before developing notes of milky caramel, breadcrumbs and yeast, culminating in aromas of dried fruit and honey.

Palate

An explosion of freshness in the mouth, followed by strong persistence. The complex aromas of fresh fruit and caramel perpetuate the intensity.

Food Matching

Ideal as an aperitif and beyond, Mumm Cordon Rouge works as well as an accompaniment to white meat, as it does to fish or fine cured meats (Italian ham, smoked duck breast) or just to pop open to celebrate your win on the racetrack!

Winery Profile

The history of G.H. Mumm Champagne details a century and a half of passion. The flagship of the House of G.H. Mumm, Cordon Rouge, has always been associated with situations which evoke Champagne – celebration, refinement, prestige and joie de vivre. Today GH Mumm is the third largest international Champagne House and exports to over 100 countries.

The first pages of the House of G.H.MUMM fabled winemaking history were written long before 1827, its official founding date. The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the twelfth century. Already in 1761, the family had launched a business as wine producers and merchants based in Cologne, Germany under the name "P. A. Mumm", after its owner Peter Arnold Mumm. The company owned large vineyards in the Rhine valley, where it created its own wines.

In the early years of the nineteenth century, Peter Arnold Mumm's three sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, recognised the sales potential of the outstanding sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France. As Germany and France enjoyed good relations at the time, the Mumm brothers made the bold decision to establish a new branch of the family company in the Champagne region, creating a branch office in Reims with the assistance of a local representative, G. Heuser.

From the outset, quality was the key watchword for the partners in this new entity formed in 1827, and it has remained so for all of their successors. This approach would be encapsulated in the motto penned by Georges Hermann Mumm: "Only the best".

Aromas of lemon biscuit, grapefruit, smoke and mineral. On the palate light with a soda mineral character, sulphide, citrus and a slight caramel biscuit flavour too, which is very nice. No great depth but offers a certain fluffy dry white towel texture which makes it slip down nicely. Finishes dry and salty but not especially long. Solid NV. Rating 90 - Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (NOV/2008).

34% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, 33% Pinot Meunier Lovely intensity of ripe apple, toasted brioche and lemon tart aromas with a waft of red berries. Crisp acidity, a little lacking in concentration on the mid-palate. Some chalkiness. Long finish. Elegant. Rating 88 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Mar/2010)

The NV Brut Cordon Rouge opens with attractive, open aromatics that suggest a level of ripeness that doesn't quite come through on the palate. Still, this fresh, perfumed Champagne is a solid effort in its price range. Peaches, apricots and flowers and complexity on the finish. Rating 87 - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate # 186 (Dec/2009)

Light gold. Expressive nose mingling a fruity note with a slightly toasted biscuity touch. Supple, melted attack, small bubbles, long-lasting freshness. A classic-style, well-made dry sparkler. Rating 86 - Gilbert & Gaillard (MAR/2010).
